Atelier Midavaine - Paris laque d’art entreprise de patrimoine vivant
Lacquer since 1919

The art of lacquer as a living legacy. Introducing Nusom Collective partner @atelier_midavaine. Atelier Midavaine was founded in Paris in 1919 by Louis Midavaine. More than a century later, the family atelier is led by his granddaughter Anne Midavaine from the same rue Pergolèse address in the 17th arrondissement. Also holders of the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV) label, the atelier carries forward an extraordinary knowledge of lacquer and its possibilities. Their work extends far beyond furniture. Large-scale wall and ceiling panels, folding screens, headboards, tabletops, lighting and decorative objects can all become a canvas for the atelier’s work. Gold leaf, silver leaf, mother of pearl, crackle, gradients and hand-painted imagery are layered into surfaces that can be subtle and abstract or extraordinarily detailed. Animals, landscapes, plants and decorative scenes all form part of their vocabulary. What we particularly love is how architectural the work can become. Atelier Midavaine develops commissions for residential, hospitality, superyacht and private aviation projects, working closely with designers from an initial reference or idea through sampling, development and final execution. It means lacquer can be considered from the beginning of a project, not simply as a finish, but as an integral part of the interior. // Discover more nusom.co hello@nusom.co by @atelier_midavaine
**The Magic of Cartier’s Artisans** In February 2026, I had the privilege of being invited by Cartier to take part in an event in Tokyo, at one of the Maison’s flagship boutiques in the famous Ginza district. Running for three weeks, the event celebrated French artisans who work closely with the Maison. Alongside my friends from Atelier Midavaine, Lison de Caunes, Atelier Lilikpo, Xiaobei Dong, Ryo Hikosaka, Hervé Obligi and Philippe Nicolas, I had the opportunity to demonstrate our craftsmanship to the Japanese public. It was an unforgettable experience. The enthusiasm and hospitality of the Japanese people are truly unparalleled. It was also an opportunity for me to travel alone for the first time to a fascinating country I had dreamed of discovering since childhood, and which has always been a source of inspiration for my painting. My heartfelt thanks to Hélène Kelmachter and the entire Cartier team for organising this extraordinary event, one that will forever hold a special place in my career as a craft artist. #cartier #ghinza #tokyo #cedricpeltier #craftartists @jeannoel_turquet from @atelier_midavaine @herve.obligi @atelierslisondecaunes @sikaviagbo from @atelier_lilikpo @ryohikosaka @xiaobeidong @sculpteur.philippenicolas @frenchsamourai @cartier by @atelier_midavaine
Focus on: artistic lacquer. Lacquer is one of those materials where the finished surface gives very little away about the amount of work beneath it. At Atelier Midavaine in Paris, the process brings together drawing, painting, surface preparation and layer upon layer of specialist decorative work. Gold leaf, silver leaf, mother of pearl, powders and eggshell can all become part of the composition. The atelier has worked with lacquer for more than a century, applying this knowledge across furniture, objects, folding screens and large architectural wall and ceiling pieces. For Anne Midavaine, there is also an important dialogue between Asia and Europe within the craft, reflecting the journey of lacquer techniques into the French decorative arts. What makes it particularly interesting for interiors is its range. Lacquer can be quiet and almost textural, highly decorative, figurative, abstract, metallic or richly coloured. A material, but also an entire artistic language. // Discover more nusom.co hello@nusom.co by @atelier_midavaine

#ecoleboulle #ébénisterie #cabinetmaking #design by @atelier_midavaine

Inside Atelier Midavaine, Paris 2026 ~ Nusom Collective workshop tour 🇫🇷 @atelier_midavaine Three generations of lacquer mastery, where time-honoured craft meets contemporary design. During our workshop tour, we stepped into a world of layered colour, light, texture and most importantly, patience. Each surface built slowly by hand, each finish revealing depth, reflection and quiet precision. From gilding, eggshell and mother of pearl inlay to mirror gloss and crackled lacquer, Atelier Midavaine’s work is a study in restraint, skill and material poetry. Like all our artisan Partners, it is the human aspect and creativity that makes each item unique. The hand gestures that communicate softly, yet leave a lasting impressions. A big thank you to those who joined us and the wonderful Anne and her exceptionally talented team for giving us the privilege to explore the home of their work. #NusomCollective #AtelierMidavaine #ParisDesign #ArtisanWorkshop #LacquerArt MaterialCulture DesignProcess by @atelier_midavaine
