Winter arrived overnight. With autumn gold still glowing through the snow, these are the moments that feel a little extra special.

Autumn had a few surprises in store this year.

I recently went out to photograph these beautiful trees, and their colours caught me completely off guard. After such a dry summer here in Switzerland, with many trees losing leaves early, I’d expected a more muted autumn. Yet this season turned out to be so beautiful, and these trees were a lovely example of that.

Were you surprised by the autumn colours this year too? And which of these compositions speaks to you the most?

Autumn poetry in the fading light.

Standing right at the edge of the fog as twilight sets in always feels special to me. Hoping to catch that moment, I recently headed up a mountain. Here are ten of my favourite images from that trip.

I’m happy fog season is back, bringing more opportunities to capture scenes like these at dusk. Getting the conditions right can be tricky, though. You need enough wind to bring movement to the fog, but keeping the camera steady during exposures of ten to fifteen seconds becomes a challenge.

Sometimes, finding a sheltered spot makes all the difference. Other times, I use my jacket to shield the camera from the wind. Small tricks that can help turn a shaky exposure into a sharp image.

Which of these ten images is your favourite?

I’d feared there might be no water left.

After Switzerland’s incredibly dry summer, the lake was low, as expected. But it held just enough water for a beautiful reflection, while revealing rocks usually hidden beneath the surface. The perfect combination.

Then the sky caught fire, and I could barely contain my joy. I just stood there, grinning behind the camera, taking it all in.

This glacier lake was filled with huge pieces of ice, calved from the glacier and slowly drifting across the water. During the night, everything froze together, and I found myself wandering from one piece of ice to another, quietly searching for compositions.

Just a small human figure moving through this immense world of ice, mountains and darkness.

Looking at this image today brings back that exact feeling. The cold, the silence, the scale of everything around me, and this almost otherworldly sense of being somewhere far removed from everyday life.

I’d probably move a little more carefully through a place like this today. But I’m grateful for these memories.

Sometimes a photograph doesn’t just show you where you were. It takes you back there.

There’s something special about spending a night under the stars, especially when you have a place almost entirely to yourself.

This image combines two moments in time: the foreground captured during blue hour and the night sky photographed later under much darker conditions.

The individual images were processed, stacked and brought together using Lightroom, Photoshop, Starry Landscape Stacker and RC Astro plugins. Since the sky was captured with a star tracker, combining it with a separately photographed foreground is essential. While the tracker follows the movement of the stars to keep them sharp, the landscape itself shifts during the exposure and can no longer be used as a static foreground.

A bit of planning, a lot of time under the stars, and quite a bit of work in post-processing. But nights like this make it all worth it.

A few more moments from this beautiful glacier lake, simply because I couldn’t get enough of this atmosphere.

All evening, we were right on the edge of the clouds, disappearing into the mist and emerging again moments later. Mystical mountains fading into the clouds, with their reflections perfectly clear below.

These are the moments I live for as a landscape photographer.

After a full day and night of rain, I drove to this mountain lake in the morning with one simple hope: that the light might somehow break through.

And for just a few fleeting moments, it did.

Sunlight slipped between the clouds, painting the mountains in narrow bands of light. Unstable, unpredictable, and gone almost as quickly as it appeared.

Somehow, I had a feeling it would happen. And moments like this are exactly why I keep chasing the light.

Some nights just have it all.

Recently, I spent an unforgettable night out there with two photographers who joined me for a Milky Way workshop. We couldn’t have asked for better conditions. Clear skies, an incredible landscape and plenty of time to shoot, experiment and simply enjoy the moment.

There’s something special about sharing a night like this with people who are just as passionate about photography. A perfect night under the stars.

As landscape photographers, we’re always chasing the light.

And sometimes, after hours of waiting, the sky suddenly comes alive with color. Those are the moments we keep coming back for.

Which one of these 20 moments is your favorite?

Yesterday, I noticed that the conditions for sunset could turn out to be pretty spectacular. The only problem: I realized it just about 1.5 hours before sunset.

So I packed my gear, drove off and hiked up to one of my favorite lakes, nestled right in the heart of my local mountain range, in record time. I arrived only about 15 minutes before sunset, but luckily found a composition quite quickly.

What caught my eye were all the beech leaves floating in the water. Some still fresh and green, others already yellow, orange and brown. Together with the reflection of the sky, they added these beautiful little splashes of color to the scene.

For me, this is another reminder that we don’t always have to rush to new places to find something new. I’ve photographed this lake countless times over the years, yet I had never seen this particular composition under conditions like these.

I think the unusually long dry period we’ve had in Switzerland this year played a big part. Many leaves have fallen much earlier than usual, creating these rather special conditions.

I’m really happy with how this one turned out. And even though my legs are still reminding me today just how fast I hiked up there, I’d say it was definitely worth it.
