How can AI help prevent manufacturing errors before they make it down the assembly line?

ISE Associate Professor Konstantinos Mykoniatis is helping answer that question through a $500,000 National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded research project focused on combining artificial intelligence and digital twins to make manufacturing processes smarter and more reliable.

The Tiger Motors Lab will serve as the project’s real-world testing ground, where researchers will explore how AI-powered cameras and virtual manufacturing models can identify potential problems, predict downstream errors and help prevent defects before they happen.

For Megan Green, finding the right engineering major meant finding a field that matched the way she naturally approaches problems.

A Huntsville, Alabama, native, Megan began her Auburn journey in aerospace engineering before discovering that industrial and systems engineering was a better fit for her interests in processes, efficiency and problem-solving.

“Getting to create unique solutions to unique problems, implement changes to make systems more efficient, and help keep people safe in the workplace really sparked my interest as a freshman,” she said.

Her favorite way to explain the switch?

“I would rather help the NASA engineers figure out what they need and how long it’ll take to build the rocket than be the one designing it.”

Megan has also found plenty of room at Auburn to pursue her passion for the arts. She has completed minors in Technical Theatre and Industrial & Graphic Design Processes and serves as a Cupola Engineering Ambassador, giving tours and sharing her love for Auburn with prospective students and families.

Last summer, Megan put her ISE skills to work during an internship with IKO Southeast Inc., where she got hands-on experience with an active manufacturing production line.

“I spent every day of that summer in steel toes and full PPE, and learned that I really enjoyed getting to be so hands-on with my work,” she said.

Now, Megan is finishing her undergraduate degree and preparing to begin her master’s in industrial and systems engineering at Auburn in January. 🧡💙

“I feel like there’s a great culture of support and collaboration among the students, as well as with the faculty members,” she said.

We’re excited to see what’s next for Megan!
