work 002 2026.03 — a study of Draupadi’s disrobing on paper. Each piece is cut by hand. While reading the Mahabharata for the first time earlier this year I was captured by the visual of Draupadi’s endless sari and I challenged myself to make something large and tactile. by @keyavadgama

practice sketches 2026.01-2026.04

These are a few sketches I’ve done so far this year. I don’t normally start with such formalized questions in mind, more like an inkling of what I’m trying to do because I prefer an emergent process. But for the sake of sharing my work here I wanted to formalize them :) by @keyavadgama

Self portrait, 2026. 📷 And a necessary reintroduction. The startup I was working for shutdown in September last year. I spent the last six months job hunting, trying to recover from burnout, and doing a lot of introspection. Much of that introspection has been about this platform and what I’m doing on it.

I’ve been posting my work on here since 2014 (although you won’t see those posts on my feed) and I’ve gone through many evolutions as a designer and creative. If you’ve followed me since then you might remember some of them: wedding calligrapher, hand letterer, type design student, design teacher, back to type design, and most recently brand designer. There’s a common thread among all of them that I was unable to see until now: I pursued them because they were practical creative paths. I provided services that helped people. And for a long time that felt amazing. Until it didn’t.

I let myself believe that work wasn’t worth creating unless I was getting paid or sought out to make it. But making something just so it exists is justification enough.

I love being Indian but it’s a paradoxical culture — India has a rich history of craft and aesthetics yet it looks down on those who pursue art (“it’s just not practical!”). I didn’t understand how deeply ingrained that mindset was. I’ve been afraid to call myself an artist for as long as I can remember. Losing my job forced me to grapple with the fact that my job is not and should not be my whole identity.

I’m an artist. I’m also a designer. But I don’t want to execute on someone else’s vision outside of my day job anymore. I still love type and lettering and it will always be a part of my practice, it’s just not going to be the *only* thing anymore.

I started @avjo__world as a place for me to set down those expectations I held and finally make some damn art. taken in California, USA by @keyavadgama
