A party of resistance that aims to bring together working people to build a socialist society

POSTS STORIES REELS

“Speakers stressed on structural changes in economic and governance systems to free the working people from an imperialist debt trap and elite capture.

Dr Aasim Sajjad Akhtar, associate professor of political economy at Quaid-i-Azam University and deputy secretary-general of the Awami Workers Party (Marxist), said “debt sovereignty meant sovereignty of the people”.

He argued that the IMF and World Bank have created a debt trap in which countries are bent to their will while ordinary people bear the burden. He asked why the IMF prescribes various kinds of taxes and levies on petroleum, electricity, gas and other essentials but never makes taxing large landowners, feudal lords, real-estate tycoons or non-productive expenditure a condition.

Akhtar said public welfare budgets had been cut for decades, unemployment was far higher than the official claim of 7pc, and the elite received an annual hidden subsidy of $17 billion. He added that the government was quick to raze the makeshift shelters and confiscate pushcarts of the working class but remained a silent spectator on land grabbing by the real-estate mafia.

He urged lawyers, teachers, social and political activists to wage a common struggle against what he called an imperialist exploitative financial system.”

Class war is real
No to politics of hate by @awamiworkers

“Pakistan’s masses are the targets of a scandalous class war that becomes more intense with each passing day. The main protagonists of this war are Pakistan’s own militarised ruling class and its external patrons, including the World Bank, IMF and bilateral ‘partners’.
In 2020, the UNDP’s annual Pakistan National Human Development Report explicitly stated that Pakistan’s militarised ruling class benefits from hidden — and sometimes overt — subsidies to the tune of $17.4 billion per annum. Six years later, one can assume that this figure has grown; it is another matter that donors are seemingly unwilling to name the protagonists of this class war as explicitly now as in 2020.
And the political and intellectual mainstream is least concerned with the banality of everyday class war in comparison to intra-elite palace intrigues and diplomatic ‘successes’ in the geopolitical realm.
Indeed, mainstream political conflict in Pakistan features only shades of the right, and the object of politics is to secure the good graces of the establishment, which in turn continues to rely on the age-old policy of securing geostrategic rents from external patrons.
Working families are eating less on the whole and even less nutritiously than before; kids are pulled out of school and forced to work to supplement meagre household incomes; even those who imagine themselves as white-collar workers, let alone those who are in the category of extreme poor, contemplate killing themselves and their offspring to preserve their dignity.
It is thus that one is reminded of the 18th-century ‘French princess’ to whom the reply ‘let them eat cake’ was attributed, when her advisers explained that the mass of her subjects were not able to afford bread. The French Revolution followed some years later.“

“The majority of the world’s states have followed the US lead by making the prosecution and hunting down of ‘terrorists’ their primary raison d’être. Ideological apparatuses, including the culture industry, have indoctrinated generations of young and old alike into believing that ‘terror’ is ubiquitous and that the state must be endlessly empowered to snuff it out, even at the cost of basic liberties.
Washington has thrown $8 trillion at various wars since 2001, a significant chunk of which has been pocketed by private defence contractors integrated with the deep state. In Pakistan, too, the ‘war on terror’ inaugurated a host of opportunities for state functionaries and private contractors to mint money.
With the rise of Big Tech to the apex of global capitalism, the nexus of state and private capital has morphed into a behemoth without historical precedent. Despite their claims of being pro-market libertarians, billionaires like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk are buttressing the state’s immense coercive and surveillance capacities. They view humanity as a plaything that is, at best, ‘saved’ and, at worst, sacrificed in the interests of landing on Mars or crafting more ‘intelligent’ species.
The US state and Silicon Valley billionaires are the primary protagonists of the contemporary militarised capitalist order. But we cannot be seduced by blind-faith arguments that there are ‘good’ states — not least of them our own — and ‘green’ capitalisms that do not conform to the overarching logic of the system.
We need, instead, to learn the lessons from the ‘war on terror’ and stop being cheerleaders for an even more sinister and unhinged digitalised fusion of state and corporate power that will shape our present and future.”
