I had to move away from home, from my parents, my siblings, and everything that had ever felt familiar, to pursue the one thing I knew I wanted to do with my life — study music, and eventually spend my life making it. I had never really stepped outside my safe space before that. Suddenly, I had to learn how to live alone, figure things out on my own, face my fears, my traumas, my strengths, even the little things like remembering to eat properly. Somewhere along the way, I met so many people, made new friends, found new relationships, saw different sides of people I thought I knew, and watched some of those connections stay while others slowly disappear with time. I had to leave so many things behind to become the person I am today.

But through all of that growing up, all I ever really missed was something so simple — sitting with my mother while she gives me a head massage, and then braids my hair so the oil stays in for a while. Maybe growing up is learning to live without the things that once made you feel safe, and then realizing how deeply you still need them. I feel incredibly lucky that, after everything, I can still come home to this.

I hope everyone gets the chance to build the life they dream of, to leave their comfort zone, find themselves, lose people, find new ones, and become who they’re meant to be — but I also hope everyone gets enough time to come back home, sit with their parents, their siblings, and the people they love. Because no matter how far we go, some parts of home will always feel like home. ❤️ by @ayn.umar
