My name is Dr Andy Moon, and I am Oregon’s only dedicated jiu jitsu physical therapy practice.

I am a doctor of physical therapy of 16 years and I exclusively work with jiu jitsu and combat athletes.

Why?

Because this sport is too complex and too important not to have a dedicated rehab provider.

Jiu jitsu and combat athletes deserve to be treated with specialized, inspiring care.

And that’s why I built Back on the Mat PT.

Not to be another physical therapy clinic.

But to be a place where grapplers can recover smarter, perform better, and stay on the mats longer.

If your goal is simply to be pain-free, there are plenty of options.

If your goal is to roll with confidence again...

You’re in the right place.

My mission is to serve my people, the jiu jitsu community, the best way I know how.

Back on the Mat PT = Built for grapplers.

📩 DM ROLL to learn how we can get you back on the mats. by @backonthematpt

The standard of care in today’s healthcare system is underwhelming to say the least …yet we have come to accept it because we have had so few choices.

I know this firsthand - not only as a patient seeking care, but also, unfortunately, as someone who has worked within this uninspiring, mediocre system.

That is exactly why Back on the Mat PT exists.

This is not a run-of-the-mill, templated physical therapy or strength and conditioning program.

This is fully customized, deliberately curated programming built specifically for BJJ athletes and grapplers - designed to address your injuries, expose your blind spots, and move you toward your goals. We work collaboratively, with ongoing coaching and accountability every step of the way.

Don’t settle for generic care. You deserve better.

If you’re dealing with an injury or simply want to shore up weaknesses before they become problems, reach out and let’s talk.

Ever feel like death your first roll back from injury?

Pro tip 👇:

If you’ve been sidelined with a leg injury and can’t do high-impact cardio like running, try lower-impact options like the bike or rower.

If cycling or rowing still isn’t in the cards, you can use tools like the SkiErg, battle ropes, or a push–pull sled to get your heart rate up and stay conditioned.

If you’re managing an upper body injury and running or cycling doesn’t aggravate it, absolutely keep those in your routine.

Bottom line: there’s always something you can do to stay active and make your return to the mats smoother.

3️⃣ options to achieve thoracic extension + overhead shoulder motion:

Level 1 Supine lat stretch using a PVC pipe: if you have tight lats like I do, it makes overhead shoulder flexion hard. Key here is to maintain a flat low back and palms are facing up.

3 options to achieve thoracic extension + overhead shoulder motion:

Level 2 Anchored TSpine extension: this one can feel intense if you lack thoracic extension. Dip your hips back towards the floor as your arms remain fixed overhead.

3 options to achieve thoracic extension + overhead shoulder motion:

Level 3 Bench lat pullover: Adding resistance/ weight is key to not only achieve more thoracic extension but to add load to that position by @backonthematpt

Like Gordon said, in jiu jitsu our spines are constantly flexed and our shoulders are rounded, and if you have a desk job you’re doing that all day too.

So extend your spine and get your shoulders over your head EVERY DAY!

Rehab doesn’t always mean Therabands and baby weights. Sometimes it looks like… lifting weights.

Every movement here is intentional and modified around my shoulder.

That’s because I’m dealing with a SLAP tear (superior labrum anterior to posterior), right where the biceps tendon anchors into the labrum.

I’m specifically avoiding positions that crank shear stress into the superior labrum:

🚫 Overhead pressing
🚫 Deep benching and Dips
🚫 Wide grip pull-ups

Instead, I’m doubling down on movements I can load safely and progressively.

This is what rehab should look like.

Not avoiding load, but intelligently progressing it.

If you’re dealing with shoulder issues, DM me SHOULDER and I’ll personally help you with a rehab plan that actually works.

🥋 I’m looking for 3 jiu jitsu athletes who are dealing with shoulder pain and want to get back on the mats.

The forces our joints experience in jiu jitsu - and the SPEED at which those forces are applied - are unique to our sport.

Return-to-sport rehab should be as specific as possible.

I’m utilizing joint-specific speed work, incorporating principles from the recent FRS Summit @functional_range_conditioning, to prepare the shoulder for the unique demands of grappling.

If you’ve already gone through traditional PT but you’re STILL dealing with shoulder pain or struggling to confidently return to training, there might be a gap in your rehab that needs to be addressed.

I understand the demands of this sport because I train in it myself.

At Back on the Mat PT, I help jiu jitsu athletes bridge that gap with rehab that’s built around the demands of grappling.

I’m looking for 3 athletes who are ready to take that next step.

DM me SHOULDER now and let’s talk about getting you back on the mats.

If you train jiu jitsu, you know it’s so much more than just a sport.

One of the things I’ve found to be most valuable in working with injured grapplers isn’t just my clinical knowledge or my ability to prescribe the right exercises.

It’s understanding what it FEELS like to be injured as a jiu jitsu athlete.

I train in this sport, too. I’m on the same mats as you. And I know how frustrating it can be when your body doesn’t allow you to do what you love.

Know that you’re not navigating this process alone.

Because good rehab isn’t just about healing tissue or getting stronger.

It’s about helping you rebuild your confidence, trust your body again, and get back to doing what you love.

So, if you’re dealing with an injury, my advice is simple: Find a provider who understands your sport AND knows how to get you back to performing on the mats.

You deserve more than generic rehab. You deserve someone who understands the goal isn’t just getting you out of pain.

Do you have people in your life that can call you out on your 🐂 💩?

No? Not everyone does.

Luckily I have these people in my life. And while being called out is no fun and I never really enjoy those conversations, I have come to value these relationships so much more than the ones where I’m not being pushed or feeling that discomfort.

It’s through the discomfort where we truly grow and reach our full potential.

As your rehab coach, part of my role is to call you out. Hold you accountable. Point out your blind spots.

Not to put you down or make you feel less than. But it is always rooted in me wanting to see you realize your potential and win in life.

If you don’t have someone in your life who will challenge you and can help you grow, DM me COACH.

At Back on the Mat PT, I’m NOT trying to get you through as many visits as your insurance will authorize.

I’m trying to get you better.

That means:

▶️ Hour-long, one-on-one sessions
▶️ A program built specifically around YOU and your schedule
▶️ Rehab that progresses as you improve
▶️ Testing and objective measures to make sure you’re actually ready
▶️ Training that prepares you for the demands of your sport
▶️ A clear roadmap to get you back on the mats and keep you there

Being out-of-network allows me to spend my time focused on you, rather than navigating the restrictions, authorizations, visit limits, billing codes and reimbursement structures that come with insurance-based care.

And let’s be honest: insurance doesn’t mean “free” healthcare.

Higher deductibles, copays and coinsurance can still leave you paying significant money out of pocket before your benefits really kick in.

Meanwhile, insurance companies use utilization reviews and third-party authorization processes to determine whether care gets approved - even when you’ve been paying for that coverage the whole time!

The goal is to maximize your OUTCOME.

You don’t need more PT.

You need the right PT.

DM me ROADMAP and let’s talk about what that could look like for you. by @backonthematpt
