The girls from Ballybrook Farm did a great job at the Royal Melbourne Show! Wilma, Suzie and Lara (with her baby Silky) each won their classes and age groups. Wilma then went on to win the title of Grand Champion Highland Female. We were all absolutely exhausted after a long few days at the show and all of the cows had a very big nap once they got back to their stalls. We have also gotten back from the Bendigo show (which was the Victorian state show for the Highlands this year) and we will be posting some pictures from this soon. - #highlandcow #showcow #highlandcowexperience #royalmelbourneshow by @ballybrook_farm
Highland are incredibly adaptable and hardy in a wide range of weather conditions. Because of this, we are able to keep our cattle outdoors all year round. There are many physical and psychological benefits to cattle living in natural outdoor spaces. While it is often tempting to bring them inside for a cuddle, what's best for them is being outdoors in nature! - #highlandcow #highlandcalf #highlandcowexperience #thingstodomelbourne by @ballybrook_farm
Welcome home Nano (officially Nano Dubh of Bairnsley). Nano was born on the farm almost 10 years ago and has spent the last few years traveling around as a stud bull. He has grown quite a bit since the last time I saw him and now weighs in at over 1000kg. Although his passion for tossing hay all over himself has stayed consistent. Nano is a very docile boy but needed a bit of a refresh for his communication skills. His go to move was to shake his big horns around, which looks intimidating and can be unsafe for those handling him. We are starting with getting him to turn his head to the side when he wants a brush. This allows us to get nice and close without having to worry about him accidentally bumping us with his horns. So far he is settling in very nicely and we are all very excited to see how his training comes along. #highlandcow #highlandbull #farmtour #animalexperience by @ballybrook_farm

The calves are in their mouthy stage! Anything new is getting nibbled on. They have tried chewing on the buggy, fence posts, people's clothes and much much more. Luckily, calves (and adult cows) don't have top teeth at the front, so they never end up doing too much damage! - #highlandcow #highlandcalf #babyhighlandcow #animalexperience #thingstodomelbourne by @ballybrook_farm
As the weather starts to warm up our Highlands will shed most of their long shaggy coats to get ready for summer. Beltula has started to shed slightly earlier than some of the others which means that she is extra itchy at the moment. A few days ago she decided that the dam wall was a good spot to itch on and covered her entire face in mud. Thankfully she gets brushed multiple times a day during our Highland cow experience/farm tours. This brushing will assist her to shed her coat quicker and help her feel much less itchy! - #highlandcow #highlandcowexperience #animalexperience #thingstodomelbourne #cow by @ballybrook_farm

Meet Isla, officially Isla Rudah of Bairnsley. Isla is now 16 years old and has grown some beautiful horns. A Highlands horns will continue to grow for their whole life, so there is still plenty of time for them to get even bigger! Isla came first out of all of the Highlands at the 2013 Royal Melbourne Show. She also won the Senior Champion title at the 2014 National Highalnd Show. She is an incredibly relaxed and easygoing girl and loves meeting new people. Her daughter, Coruisk (pictured on the last slide), has inherited her mum's temperament and is the spitting image of Isla at her age! #highlandcow #highlandcowexperience #thingstodomelbourne #animalexperience #highlandcalf by @ballybrook_farm

Highland cows love being brushed as it mimics the social grooming they do with each other! Little Silky isn't quite sure what all the fuss is about just yet but she likes to feel included. #highlandcow #highlandcalf #babyhighlandcow #highlandcowexperience #thingstodomelbourne by @ballybrook_farm
Do cows sleep standing up? No! Horses have specialised tendons and ligaments that allow them to rest and sleep while standing up (although for deep sleep they will still lay down). Cattle don't have this feature, and instead, will curl up on the ground to sleep. In the video above Salen had just woken up from a nap and decided to itch his chest on the ground before standing up and coming to get a pat. #highlandcow #highlandbull #highlandcalf #animalexperience #thingstodomelbourne by @ballybrook_farm
