I didn’t start this company to make another tattoo balm. Because that’s not where the problem was. The industry has been fighting over lotions and salves for years in an endless ingredient war. Meanwhile, the first step of aftercare hasn’t changed in a decade. The wash. Artists create world-class work… and the aftercare still starts with harsh, microbiome-destroying antibacterial soap. That didn’t make sense to me. So I stepped out of the balm wars and built something specifically for that moment. Not to compete over lotion. To fix the foundation. Yes, we offer a balm in our artist kits now. But we only built it because shops needed a complete, biologically matched system to hand to their clients. But the soap is the hero. You can’t fix a stripped skin barrier just by rubbing lotion on it. This is why we changed our name. This is why we focus on the soap first. And this is why Banger Tattoo Care exists. The soap on most tattoo aftercare sheets was reviewed by the FDA in 2016. What they found should have changed every aftercare protocol in America. It didn’t. Antibacterial soap — Dial Gold, Safeguard, antibacterial Dove — is still the default recommendation at most tattoo shops and PMU studios across the country. The FDA found zero evidence it prevents infection better than plain soap and water. The recommendation just never got updated. It gets worse. The antibacterial agents in these soaps disrupt your skin microbiome — the community of beneficial bacteria actively protecting your healing wound, maintaining pH balance, and signaling your immune system. Your skin has a built-in defense system working around the clock on your fresh tattoo. Antibacterial soap compromises it. The format problem runs deeper than the ingredients. Foam cleansers and liquid soaps are 8 to 10 percent active ingredients. The rest is water. They strip oils from skin at exactly the moment skin needs them most. Cold-process bar soap works differently. It retains natural glycerin and unsaponified fatty acids. It cleanses without stripping. The microbiome stays intact between washes. Your skin feels like skin after — not like it survived something. The protocol correction is already happening. 1,250+ tattoo artists and PMU professionals have made the switch. The aftercare sheet just hasn’t caught up yet. Nobody made soap for tattooed skin. So we did. 🔶 Save this. Your next aftercare conversation starts here. . . . . . "NO BAR SOAP." It is on most aftercare sheets. The reasoning feels airtight. It is also scientifically false. 🔶 The fear makes sense — a wet bar in the shower feels like a bacteria farm. Putting it on a fresh, open tattoo sounds reckless. But clinical science settled this debate nearly 40 years ago. Researchers contaminated a bar soap with E. coli at 70 times the level found on a normal used bar. 16 volunteers washed with it. Zero bacteria transferred to any of them. Zero. 🔶 Meanwhile — the liquid pumps the industry switched to? 1 in 4 bulk refillable dispensers in public settings are actively contaminated. People washing with those dispensers increased bad bacteria on their hands by 26 times. The format we were told was safer is carrying the actual risk. The real threat to a healing tattoo is not the format of the soap. It is a compromised skin barrier from harsh liquid antibacterial cleansers stripping your natural lipids. Micro-cracks are how infection actually enters. A dedicated personal bar — used by one person, allowed to dry between uses — is the most operationally sound choice for fresh ink. The chemistry is not new. The aftercare sheet just never got updated. 📥 Save this before your next session. 🤙 Send it to whoever still recommends Dial Gold. The tattoo industry taught you to obsess over the balm. The peeling. The itching. The dryness after washing. “What balm should I use?” Wrong product. Wrong question. The soap sets the baseline. The balm works with whatever the soap left behind. If the soap stripped your skin barrier with every wash — the balm is not healing you. It is managing the damage. Peer-reviewed dermatology research confirms that certain antibacterial agents solubilize the intercellular lipids in your skin barrier. The removal of those lipids increases moisture loss through the skin surface. With continued use the barrier damage worsens. That is 60 washes of progressive damage on a healing tattoo. The FDA ruled in 2016 that antibacterial soap has no proven benefit over plain soap and water. It has a proven cost. Your skin barrier. The soap is the hero. Skip the antibacterial soap. Use a fragrance-free cold-process bar soap that delivers fatty acids during the wash — not after it. 🔶 Day 1 Bar by Banger Tattoo Care. The Peeling Phase: Stop Freaking Out This is what the peeling phase should actually look like after consistent care with our Day 1 Bar and Banger Balm. The skin looks gnarly. It’s flaking. It feels tight. That’s normal. This is exactly what you want to see. What to do: • Don’t pick it - let it fall naturally • Keep it moisturized with a thin layer of balm • Wash gently when needed • Trust the process This is my shin piece from my 10-hour session with @handshakesnaketattoos- Jacob Gordon at @edenbodyartstudios. The peeling phase is right on schedule. Consistency over complexity. Keep it simple. 💣 Day 1 Bar + Banger Balm #tattooaftercare #bangertattoocare #tattooartist #tattoosupplies #tattoo by @bangertattoocare
