“A Banner Elk Christmas” musical variety show returns in just over a month at Ensemble Stage! It's popular, so most of the 7 showtimes sell out (hence this advance notice!). The fast-paced 70-minute show pays homage to the television variety shows of the 60s and 70s - with all or parts of 40 songs, lots of choreography and costume changes. Shows: Dec 4, 11, 12, 18, 19 & 20 at 7 PM. Matinees on Sun Dec 6 & 13 at 2 PM. $27/adult, $12/child 16 & under. Get tickets: www.ensemblestage.com or call 828-414-1844. St. John’s Episcopal Church is even prettier with some fall color this week. Built in 1862, it's tucked away on a dirt road near Valle Crucis (2.3 miles from Mast General Store). Originally located by the nearby Watauga River, the building was moved to this higher location in 1882. Currently, it's part of The Church of the Holy Cross with Sunday services during the summer only. A cross was recently carved from a tree that fell during Helene. Explore the outside including the cemetery, but the interior is not open. GPS Address: 554 Herb Thomas Rd, Sugar Grove, NC (10-mile scenic drive from Banner Elk) by @bannerelknc

Banner Elk is "NC's Ski Town" and often called the Ski Capital of the South. We are between the state’s two largest ski mountains, Beech Mtn and Sugar Mtn. They hope to open by Thanksgiving, weather premitting. Together, those two ski areas have a total of 38 slopes, 17 lifts, 16 tubing lanes, two terrain parks, and two ski schools. Beech Mountain (5,506 feet) is the highest ski resort in Eastern America. The alpine village at the base of Beech Mountain’s slopes provides a place to relax, grab a meal and warm up by a fire pit. Sugar Mountain (5,300 feet) has the most skiable acres (125) in North Carolina and the state’s only double black diamond slope. Sugar offers snowshoeing excursions and ice skating. Make lodging reservations for Christmas week and winter weekends ASAP. by @bannerelknc
