POSTS STORIES REELS

Across two days, 650 participants from 31 countries gathered in Nairobi to consider what it takes to build more resilient media systems and tell stories with care, courage and context.

Now, we have put those conversations into a report.
The Africa Media Festival 2026 Report brings together the conversations, experiences and questions that emerged around newsroom sustainability, media freedom, AI governance, community storytelling, and the future of public-interest journalism.

This is where the next part of the conversation begins.

“How can we know who we are, if we don’t remember who we were?” -Solomon Kyalo at The Baraza Lens launch early this week.

We built a community-owned documentary archive because Kenyan stories deserve to be preserved, owned, and accessible here, not elsewhere.

Head over to the link in bio to explore the archive and let us know what you think!

On Friday we came together to honour five years of Baraza Media Lab and to open our newest hub in Industrial Area, Nairobi.

From Riverside to Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru, and now Industrial Area, our hubs are growing into places where stories are nurtured, skills are strengthened, and communities gather. In just under five months, these spaces have reached more than 5,000 practitioners with mentorship, training, and opportunities.

The journey that began in 2019 continues with a clear focus: building hubs that respond to local needs, expanding research to guide action, and engaging responsibly with technology including AI.

Baraza at 5 is a milestone and an invitation. Thank you for walking with us as we continue to build together. 🎇 #BarazaAt5 by @barazamedialab

The 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey shows that 34% of women in Kenya have experienced physical violence since the age of 15, while 13% have experienced sexual violence.

As we mark the Global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, this episode of Sauti Sessions brings together Tony Mwebia, Lady Dr. Kanja Wangu, Hon. Millie Odhiambo, Akinyi Odera, and Janet Anyango to discuss the realities of GBV, the challenges facing those working to prevent it, and the actions needed to protect women and girls.

Join us for this important conversation.

Some years back, Baraza Media Lab had the privilege of incubating SemaBOX when it was still an idea, a few people around it, some equipment and lots of nerve. Today, @semabox_africa is producing research that can shape an entire industry. We are honoured to have hosted the Nairobi launch of the Creative Africa Intelligence Report at our Riverside hub.

These past few weeks, the Jua Soko Masterclass, led by our implementing partner @inkcoachinglimited, brought together young people from Nairobi’s informal settlements as they took their first step into technical skilling under the Sanara Program. Each of them came with talent and ambition, and now they’re gaining the creative industry skills, hands-on experience and networks that will open real pathways into employment, freelancing and their own creative enterprises.

We can’t wait to see what they build. 💪🏾

Behind every story that holds power to account, every graphic that breaks down complex data, and every fact-check that cuts through the noise… there’s a Shujaa working overtime! ✊🏾

This #mashujaaday , we’re giving major flowers to our community members. The storytellers, journalists, creatives, partners, fact-checkers, and incredible ecosystem at large 🔥

Especially in this high-stakes election season, your work isn’t just content—it’s the front line of defense for truth, democracy, and public trust. From late-night edits to holding the line against misinformation across every beat, you keep the nation informed and inspired.

To the truth-seekers, the narrative-shifters, and the risk-takers in the room: Happy Mashujaa Day! Keep telling the stories that matter.
