Ezri wants to know when we're going back to visit her Aunt on LBI. She loves the beachy breeze blowing through her fur 💕💕💕 by @barbarastoneware

For Barbara Stone, inspiration begins with color. From the expressive brushstrokes of abstract painters to the otherworldly floral installations of Rebecca Louise Law, her work explores movement, texture, and the emotional impact of color. Even her background as a makeup artist finds its way into her ceramics, incorporating her clean and natural but impactful aesthetic into surface decoration.

Barbara has been working with clay since high school and has been a dedicated member of NYC’s ceramics community since joining Union Square Ceramics in 2002. For the past 16 years, she’s been teaching at LaMano Pottery, where she’s helped countless students develop their skills. Today, she also teaches at Mud Matters and Clay Space.

A self-proclaimed functional ware enthusiast, Barbara is particularly passionate about mugs, especially their handles. She believes the smallest details can transform an everyday object into something truly satisfying to use, and she’s always pursuing the perfect balance of form, weight, curve, and color.

“My own throwing techniques and style are a jumping off point for my students. I want to guide them to create what they see in their mind’s eye, so my influence is deep in the background.”

Wheeeeeee!!! I broke out of my hard-wired mug-n-bowl habit to make these cutie patooties!

For aaaages I’ve been drooling over the poster of Doyle Lane weed pots (please Google him) that hangs above the staircase at @lamanopottery, telling myself that I need to try to mimic some of the shapes.
(Insert hysterical laughter here)
Well, these are my first attempts and while they are perfectly fine pots, they are NOT EVEN in the NEIGHBORHOOD of the BALLPARK of those astonishing weed pots. For reference, one of his 3.75" pots sold at auction for $22,000!

I will persevere and keep you apprised of my progress! by @barbarastoneware

I don't know who these people are who are setting off dozens of incredibly loud (like gunshot sharp) fireworks on our street but they are selfish and cruel.

Imagine if it was a vet with PTSD. Inhumane. Unnecessary. Going on for hours and hours.

Even with trazodone, Ezri was shaking uncontrollably and asking me to pick her up, which she has NEVER done before. She didn't even want to eat a scrambled egg I made for her.

I finally thought of putting her in her travel bag so she could sit on the counter while I made dinner. Luckily, it helped and she's not quaking right now.

My poor girl and anyone else who's traumatized by this stupid "tradition". by @barbarastoneware

The piece on the left is the only one I can find from my pottery origin story high school days. I feel like there's one from 1975 hidden in a closet but who knows? 🤷🏻‍♀️ by @barbarastoneware

Last night I came across @thutapottery and those vases and skills are...wheeeeeee!!! Awesome!
I was inspired and had fun attempting to figure out how to do extreme wide/narrow.
I didn't get near that level of drama but I had a blast trying!
Definitely going to give it another shot!! by @barbarastoneware

THROWBACK THURSDAY TO 2021!!
I love making custom pet bowls. This was one of my absolute favorite commissions EVER, despite having to make it FOUR TIMES! The stress was bananas, especially mid-covid in a community studio!
BUT!
I learned a TON and now I pass along that knowledge to my students! by @barbarastoneware

Wanna put your phone down for a few hrs each week and get creative & down & dirty? Join my Monday morning wheel throwing class at @lamanopottery in Chelsea!

It doesn't matter if you've never touched clay or if you think you're "not creative" (hint: wheel throwing is just a skill)! I'll teach you to make stuff you can actually use!
