Campus may change but Bates will always be home. #throwback #batescollege #batesalumni #bateshistory by @bates.alumni

No tricks. Just treats!

On Thursday evening, campus was crawling with superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs, witches, and more than a few sugar-fueled Bobcats. 🎃🍬

This year’s Bates Trick or Treat brought local families to campus for a night of costumes, community, and 70,000 pieces of candy spread across 65 stations. Our little trick-or-treaters also got the chance to meet our new Bobcat mascot — with plenty of high fives and friendly hugs to help them along their candy-collecting journey.

Huge thanks to the @harwardcenter student fellows for helping to organize the evening, and to Greg Guidotti ’92, chief marketing officer for Ferrara Candy Company, and his classmates for helping make sure the candy bowls stayed very well stocked with Laffy Taffy, Jelly Belly, @sweetartscandy, Now and Laters, @nerdscandy, and more.

And of course, thanks to the students, staff, and families who made the night such a fun one.

Enjoy a few spooky scenes — including Trick-or-Treater-in-Chief @presgarryjenkins.

Alisa Amador ’18 knew she wanted to be a professional musician. She also knew that’s not all she wanted out of college. “I just had this instinct that what I needed was a liberal arts education,” says Alisa, whose “Milonga Accidental” was the first-ever Spanish language song to win NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest.

“It taught me how to think, how to process, how to express myself. I know I wouldn’t be the songwriter I am without having been here.”

Over 200 alums showed up, caught up with old friends, met new Bobcats in their city, and proved that no matter where you move after graduation, you’re never far from home.❤️

Football Game Day Feature: The Brothers Spencer

On October 11th, 2025, @batesfootball safety Major Spencer III made the most emotional interception of his career.

With the Bobcats leading by seven on the road and the Tufts University Jumbos driving late in the fourth quarter, Spencer III picked off a pass that had sailed over the intended receiver’s head. The interception clinched the win for Bates.

His identical twin brother, fellow Bates safety Michael Spencer, pointed to the sky, and Major Spencer III ran to the corner of the end zone to celebrate with his teammates, in tears.

The Spencer twins played the game with heavy hearts. They’d found out the night before their father was in the ICU back home in Texas. He had suffered from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, for the previous four years. And after a fall, he didn’t have long to live.

Major and Michael’s father, David Michael Spencer, was a darn good football player. A defensive back, he played college football at Western New Mexico and McMurry University. Then he played professionally for more than a decade in Germany and met Andrea Jones, who is the mother of their four children. David and Andrea moved to Mansfield, Texas, about 30 miles southwest of Dallas, where they raised the Spencer twins and two older sisters.

It was a football family from day one.
