⚠️This pest damages grapevine buds and can reduce crop quality and yields⚠️

KPU Research Identifies New Biological Control for Climbing Cutworm. A three-year study by Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) and Andermatt Canada has identified a promising biological control strategy for climbing cutworm.

Researchers found that a combination of parasitoid wasps, beneficial nematodes, and fungal pathogens can effectively target the pest at different life-cycle stages.

Why it matters to growers: The findings could expand future pest management options, particularly for organic vineyards, and reduce reliance on conventional insecticides. The research lays the groundwork for an integrated pest management (IPM) approach that focuses on early intervention and biological control.

A serious new pest of grapevines has been detected in Canada. Sightings have been confirmed in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, and New Brunswick.

The insect can damage and kill grapevines and can also affect many other crops, trees, and horticultural plants.

Native to Southeast Asia, the spotted lanternfly was first found in the United States in 2014 and has spread through several states. It feeds on the sap of more than 100 plant species and produces a sticky substance called honeydew that can lead to mould growth and attract other insects.

The pest is most active in September and October, when adults mate and lay eggs. Growers and the public are encouraged to learn how to identify the insect and its egg masses.

Spot it? Snap it, catch it, and report it to the @Canadian Food Inspection Agency CFIA immediately: https://inspection.canada.ca/en/plant-health/invasive-pests-and-plants/insects/spotted-lanternfly

To help prevent its spread, the @invasivespeciescentre recommends checking vehicles, outdoor equipment, and other materials for insects or egg masses before moving them from affected areas.

If you are travelling back from infested areas of Canada and the U.S., don't accidentally transport these pests. Check your car, camper, trailer or RV before making the return trip. Be sure to check any camping gear or equipment you have.

Human-assisted spread can include:
⚠️movement on cargo and containers
⚠️camping gear and outdoor equipment
⚠️patio furniture
⚠️trucks and cars
⚠️movement of plants and plant materials (including nursery plants, logs and firewood)

The Invasive Species Centre offers free factsheets and posters in English, French and Spanish, along with a free Spotted Lanternfly Training course under the Invasive Species Training Program: https://www.invasivespeciescentre.ca/invasive-insect-spotted-lanternfly-detected-in-ontario-and-canada-for-the-first-time/

Would you use a drone to spray?

Are pest or disease issues affecting your vineyard? Your insights are crucial for improving crop protection options for growers like you.

BC is developing its approach to drone-based pesticide application, with initial rules planned for the 2027 spray season, which could improve safety and efficiency for growers.

@bcgrapegrowers has been asked for input and will participate in the grape-sector minor-use consultation, a chance to share our industry's priorities and help ensure the challenges growers face are part of the conversation.

Let BCGA know so we can help bring grower priorities to the forefront. Please share any opportunities or concerns by Oct 5 with us at https://www.grapegrowers.bc.ca/contact [link in bio].

BCGA continues to play an active role in the minor-use pesticide priority-setting process, helping ensure B.C. grape growers' crop protection needs are heard and represented at the national level.

Let us know about YOUR needs for better crop protection options. by @bcgrapegrowers

European starlings are an invasive species that can significantly damage vineyards, orchards, livestock operations, and other agricultural enterprises.

Together, we can reduce the impact of invasive starlings and help protect Okanagan agriculture.

Get involved - Landowners and growers play an important role in the program's success. AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS can help reduce damage by keeping their farms clear of food (i.e. burying unwanted fruit rather than dumping it on the ground).

@bcgrapegrowers Starling Control Program works with trained contractors, landowners, and community partners to reduce starling populations through targeted trapping, monitoring, and habitat-based management.

If you are experiencing starling activity on your property or would like more information about participating, please read more about the program here: https://www.grapegrowers.bc.ca/starling-control-program [link in bio] and contact us at bcga@grapegrowers.bc.ca by @bcgrapegrowers
