Deputies Come Under Gunfire During Disturbance in East Mountains; SWAT Responds to Armed Individuals Inside Residence

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an early morning incident in Tijeras after deputies came under gunfire while responding to a disturbance involving multiple armed individuals, believed to be juveniles. At least one round struck a BCSO patrol unit.

At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026, deputies were dispatched to the 1100 block of New Mexico Highway 333 following reports of a disturbance involving several individuals at a residence. Initial callers reported yelling, a possible physical altercation, threats of violence, and individuals armed with firearms.

During the initial response, deputies made contact with a 17-year-old male outside the residence. While deputies were speaking with the juvenile, an individual at the residence opened fire in their direction. Deputies immediately took cover, moved the juvenile to safety, and established a perimeter around the property.

No deputies or civilians were reported to have been struck by gunfire. Investigators subsequently discovered that at least one round had struck a BCSO patrol unit.

Due to the presence of armed individuals inside the residence and the gunfire directed toward deputies, the BCSO SWAT Team was activated. Additional assistance was provided by the New Mexico State Police, Edgewood Police Department and Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

During the SWAT response, eight individuals exited the residence. BCSO’s drone operators also assisted by providing real-time visibility inside the home, where multiple firearms were observed.

The property has since been cleared, and the immediate threat has been resolved. BCSO Criminal Investigations Division detectives are on scene conducting interviews and investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

New Mexico Highway 333 remained closed in the immediate area while law enforcement personnel completed their operations. The roadway has since reopened.

The investigation remains active. Additional information, including potential charges, will be released as details are confirmed. by @bcso_sheriff

Today, we remember and honor the legacy of Officer Daniel Webster of the Albuquerque Police Department, whose life was tragically cut short in the line of duty on this day eleven years ago. Officer Webster was a committed and courageous officer, a devoted family man, and a U.S. Army veteran who dedicated his life to serving his country and community.

Though he did not wear a Bernalillo County badge, Officer Webster was one of us in spirit and connected deeply to our community and law enforcement family. His wife, a former deputy with our office, and his family remain in our thoughts, and we stand with them in honoring his memory and sacrifice.

Officer Webster’s bravery and dedication in the face of danger demonstrate the best of law enforcement. As we honor his service, let us also renew our own commitment to the safety of our community and to supporting one another in our mission to protect and serve.

His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all. Rest in peace, Officer Webster. We carry forward your dedication to justice and service. by @bcso_sheriff

Today is National First Responders Day, and we're taking a moment to recognize the men and women who answer the call, no matter the hour, the circumstances, or the danger.

At BCSO, we see firsthand what it takes to put on the uniform every day. The long shifts, missed holidays, difficult calls, and sacrifices that often go unnoticed. We also see the compassion, courage, and commitment our deputies bring to the communities they serve.

We're proud of our deputies and the work they do every single day, both in and out of the spotlight.

To our fellow law enforcement officers, firefighters, dispatchers, EMTs, paramedics, and all those who respond when others need help, thank you for everything you do.

And to the families who share their loved ones with this profession, we know you make sacrifices too.

You can run, but hiding just got a whole lot harder.

When a deputy lost sight of a motorcycle, BCSO's Drone as First Responder (DFR) program picked up where he left off.

Within moments, our drone pilot located the motorcycle from above and began relaying real-time information to deputies on the ground, allowing them to locate the rider and make the arrest.

This is what happens when good police work meets the right technology. Our deputies are already great at what they do. DFR gives them another advantage, helping them track suspects, coordinate their response, and make arrests more effectively.

Another child predator held accountable thanks to the hard work of our Special Victims Unit.

Mario Leyba was sentenced to 10 years in the New Mexico Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to two counts of Criminal Sexual Contact of a Minor and possession of child sexual abuse material. The victims in this case were all under the age of 13.

Leyba will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

A huge shoutout to BCSO Detective Candelaria for his dedication and investigative work on this difficult case. Investigations involving crimes against children are some of the toughest our detectives handle, and securing a conviction requires patience, attention to detail, and commitment to seeking justice for victims.

Great work, Detective Candelaria and all of BCSO SVU! Your hard work matters, and so does the justice you've helped secure for these children.

Our 2026 BCSO Trunk or Treat was a HUGE success, and we couldn't have asked for a better turnout!

We spent the days leading up to the event watching forecasts for heavy rain, hail, and thunderstorms, wondering if Mother Nature was about to ruin Halloween. But somehow, the weather held out JUST long enough for hundreds of costumes, plenty of candy, and a whole lot of fun! The second we started packing up, the lightning, rain, and hail came rolling in. Talk about perfect timing!

A massive THANK YOU to our deputies, volunteers, local businesses, and generous sponsors who helped make this event possible. We couldn't do it without you! And a very special thank you to North Valley Little League for their incredible generosity and continued support. You guys are amazing, and we're grateful for the partnership!

Most importantly, thank you to every family who came out to spend the evening with us. Seeing so many kids having a blast, showing off their costumes, and getting to know our deputies is exactly why we love doing this. by @bcso_sheriff
