Our tour guide Leslie with @landtoursgh was amazing. He is talking about the University of Ghana, which is humongous and beautiful! I saw so many tall termite hills there. You’ll also see people, vendors working and carrying items on their heads in the video. Everyone in Ghana is taught to do this at a young age.
Key Reasons for the Practice
* Physical Efficiency: Scientific studies show that trained head-loaders can carry loads up to 20% to 70% of their body weight with little to no extra energy expenditure compared to walking unencumbered. The weight rests directly down the skeletal structure rather than straining the back or shoulders.
* Free Hands: Balancing items—such as water jugs, firewood, agricultural produce, or market baskets—leaves both hands completely free to manage other tasks or navigate rough terrain.
* Early Training and Posture: Children learn the skill at a young age, gradually building neck muscles, core strength, and a specialized posture that makes the movement natural and balanced.
* Use of Cushions (Kata): Many carriers use a kata, a small round ring made of twisted cloth or leaves, which acts as a cushion to stabilize the load and protect the head.
* Economic and Trade Utility: In areas where vehicles, paved roads, or carts are impractical or unavailable, head-loading (including urban labor like the kayayo market porters in Ghana) remains a vital way to move goods.

Termite hills - massive, can reach of to 5 meters, I mostly saw them in the massive University of Ghana. The school (not pictured) so so massive and beautiful to see.

Elmina Fishing Village Cape Coast. The Main fishing Industry Cape Coast. Such a site to see, I wanted to eat all of that fish. We saw smoking and salting methods. The smoked fish smelled so good. Interestingly, I only saw small (popcorn shrimp). The fishing village surrounds the Cape Coast Slave Castle and sits in front of the now titled “Door of Return” by @bctravelco
