It’s lovely to have paintings I made earlier this year on show with @gallerydasein in a duo show ‘The Two Trees’ with work by @j.szcze . The exhibition runs until 28 November.

This painting - took me two years to make - is called ‘Sunstroke’. It took a long time to get all the smaller, praedella-inspired images in place to tell the story of how I got terrible sunstroke on a family trip to Rome. It’s also a painting about immobility and how to painters are bound by the stasis of our medium and yet always overcome immobility through colour, sequence, pattern, etc. What important moments are not captured by tourist snaps? How does the movement of travel and pilgrimage compare with stillness of nausea or iconicity?

“The house of fiction has in short not one window, but a million, a number of possible windows not to be reckoned” wrote Henry James in his 1908 preface to Portrait of a Lady (another naive woman who had a even more disastrous time in Rome!). Narrative, for James, had many possible openings. I love this notion, and wanted a frame that open up “a number of possible windows” for the viewer. by @beatrizsantosart

Where does the artwork end and everyday life begin?

Beatriz Santos works across oil painting, film, papier mâché, printmaking and installation to explore intimacy, migration, play, domesticity and sadness.

Here are some real and painterly details of the Easter Sunday I spent this year at my uncle and aunty’s house in Montealegre (literally ‘happy mountain’) north of Sardoal in Portugal. Trees are laden with ripe oranges, the sunlight is strong and warm, and a problem with the village pump meant we spent the day lugging buckets and bottles of water up the hill to the house. Family members and friends of all ages spread about the garden, creating rhythms of growth, aging and renewal.

Thank you to Paul who runs @montedajaponica , who gave me time, space and endless inspiration for me to develop the work on his cork farm at springtime earlier this year. by @beatrizsantosart

The exhibition “The Two Trees” by artists Beatriz Santos (b. 1996, Portugal) and Julia Szczerbowska (b. 1999, Poland)is now open at Gallery daSein. The exhibition will be on view until November 28, 2026.

Just as plants grow according to their own genetic patterns, artists develop their own narratives from the unique experiences of their lives. As these inner worlds unfold, they become modes of narration and part of the spirit that shape each artist. Metamorphosis allows experience to escape fixed signification, opening a path towards the unexpected power of the world. The distinct practices of these two artists reveal a scattered, hypertextual form of poetry and narration, ultimately tracing back to the moments of their lives. And so we return once more to Ovid, and to a scene in Metamorphoses in which a woman becomes a tree, here freely reimagined in the first person: "Her feet are rooted to the earth, a soft bark creeps up little by little and enfolds her groin; she makes a movement to tear her hair and finds her hands full of leaves.” by @beatrizsantosart

Gallery daSein is greatly honored to present The Two Trees, a two-person exhibition featuring recent works by Portuguese artist Beatriz Santos (@beatrizsantosart) and Polish artist Julia Szczerbowska (@j.szcze).

The Two Trees was originally the title of a poem by W. B. Yeats. Like the“trees” in Ovid’s work, the title has departed from its origin. It is not intended to retell Yeats’s poem, but to serve as a cue: to reveal the two artists‘ distinct poetic growth, and to honour their juxtaposition and their journey alongside one another.

Placing the works of Beatriz Santos and of Julia Szczerbowska together in the same space therefore amounts to more than coexistence of same gender. Through genealogical resonances, their juxtaposition allows established narratives of women to undergo ”metamorphosis“ once again, forming a secret alliance under the sign of difference.

The exhibition will open on September 13, 2026 and remain on view until November 28.

I made this work earlier this year at @padastudios in Portugal, inspired by the gleam of moonlight that I’m so incapable of capturing on my phone’s camera. The moon always looks dimmer and smaller when I try to take a photo of the night!

I was also reading Vincent Van Gogh’s letters at the time, thinking about his love of the starry night and his own paintings on the theme: ‘it is not a return to the romantic or to religious ideas, no. Nevertheless, [...] by colour and a more spontaneous drawing than delusive precision, one could express the purer nature of a countryside compared with the suburbs and cabarets of Paris.’ Vincent loved nature profoundly, and I think he would have been so happy that activists poured soup on his Sunflowers to draw attention to the climate crisis.

My moonlight is a mother-of-pearl sell I found at Fonte de Telha beach, made of alternating layers of calcium carbonate and conchiolin to form a delicate, bumpy iridescent surface.
