content warning: sexual assault

Eight years ago tonight I was raped by someone who I thought was a friend. Every year, I write something like this, but I never have the courage to post it.

Every year on this night, the humidity gives me a headache, and I choke on the August air. No matter how far away I get, both in time and space, I'm stuck in that dorm room.

Since that night, I have lived with a debilitating medical condition that affects my everyday life. And every time I have to deal with a side effect, my chest starts burning as my body fills with rage.

The first chapter I wrote for mourning skinny was about that night. Although writing is a silent activity (aside from my acrylic nails tapping away), I am slowly finding my voice.

As I choke back tears, I'm rereading my own words about grit. It's been eight long years, but my grit has allowed me to live a beautiful life in spite of that night 🤍 by @beccas.books

I just read a Teen Vogue article that says we can't live in a world where we congratulate people on losing weight, then talk about how awful it is when they go too far. I've been real quiet about Ariana Grande, but as a pro-ana tumblr survivor, I see the value in discussing with young girls that she does not look well, especially in videos where she just looks drained.

It's not that we can't talk about someone's body, it's that we must stay factual. Congratulating weight loss and giving size related compliments encourages extreme behaviors and disordered eating. Highlighting energy levels and literal bones sticking out is honest- and can be lifesaving.

I don't want Ari bullied off the internet, but I don't want young girls to look at her and think she is okay. She's not. And while it may not be my place to tell her this personally, keeping the conversation factual and not about aesthetics is important.

Revisiting this chapter of my memoir because I've slipped back into the cycle of thriving off validation about my body and cheering on others' weight loss. Recommitting to my vow, but acknowledging that factual conversations are different than passive comments.

The comments we think are compliments can be a death sentence.

Last month, I had the honor of meeting my favorite YA author Sarah Dessen! Her books Keeping the Moon and Just Listen (my personal favorite) were the first time I saw disordered eating represented in fiction. She writes in a way that makes young girls feel seen, and more importantly, hopeful 🤍

Her newest novel Change of Plans was also such a fun read 📚

pov: you honor eating disorder awareness week by bedazzling a copy of becca’s memoir

this week’s read is mourning skinny by our very own book club member becca lynn! this is a story of recovery, healing, and recognizing that you are more than your body and what it looks like. this week (and every week) we are choosing to honor the amazing things our bodies can do, not what they look like.

everyone at retreat this weekend is getting a copy but you can also get your own in my linktree!!

This month, I had the honor to hear one of my favorite authors, Chanel Miller, speak about her latest book "The Moon Without Stars". As a teacher, I LOVED hearing her stories about working with middle schoolers, but I also appreciated everything she said about her memoir "Know My Name" (the book that quite literally changed my life).

An audience member asked her how to get started on writing about their trauma, and Chanel spoke about how there were so many "external headlines"- the narrative others create for you. She encouraged us to write about our "internal headlines"...the truth and experience that is only known to you.

I wish I knew I was going to get to actually talk to her at this event because I want to thank her for inspiring me to write my own book 😭

But of course, I am a writer, not a great speaker, so she didn't get much from me 😅 by @beccas.books
