Here’s a social story to read with your child before our session. It covers what to expect, how the camera sounds, and why standing still and smiling on cue isn’t the only way to do this - because this is not how I work! I made it for kids who are autistic, anxious, or sensory sensitive, though I hope it’s just as useful for any kid who likes to know what’s coming before they’re in it. Pass it on to anyone who might need it. (And if you have any improvements or suggestions please message me!!) After many asking: Photographers you can now buy this as a template (link in profile) #inclusionmatters #neurodiversity #melbournefamilyphotographer #autism by @becmathesonphotography
I am NOT a niching photographer. I decided a long time ago to ignore very common photography business advice of niching (choose a genre and stick to it - because it’s easier to sell and what you get known for) I like photographing life across all seasons and stages. It’s fascinating to me. I’ve also been doing this long enough that it feels like I know how to translate my style/vibe/whatever you call in into whatever scenario I’m in. It’s definitely more fun this way! It’s also actually been a move that’s saved my business through COVID and dicey economic times. I’m not sure it is great business advice for everyone - but it works for me. Anyway, here are some of the things I photograph. As sets. Because I love seeing things as whole stories. Maybe I’ll niche one day… maybe not? What common denominators do you see? I’m curious. by @becmathesonphotography
Hello! It’s me. There are a few new faces and I finally did a brave thing and went and got my headshots updated by the legendary @hughstewart_ who happened to be in Melbourne one day… in fact I nearly backed out but turns out his booking process had one less step than I expected, so I couldn’t 🤣 I’m Bec she/her. I’ve been taking photos of people for around 14 years now across pretty much all of life. (I’m talking actual birth through to death and all the joy and mess and happy in between) despite being a fairly big introvert I find people very fascinating. And I think I do a great job of helping people feel relaxed when a camera is around - probably because I’m a fairly awkward slightly nerdy person and try to leave any expectations behind. I am married to Geoff (teacher) and we have three girls 11/9/4yrs. 2024 has bought some moderately wild neuro health challenges for our eldest so we are navigating that. Hooray for the Australian healthcare system. I love books - almost all books. With an extra fondness for cosy sci-fi or dystopic fiction but really so long as the characters are good, I’m there. I also love coffee (I hate cliches but here we are in Melbourne so… we’ll just ignore that one) and I find joy in housey/garden/interiors… probably more in the maximalist/vintage/dreaming far past my budget side of things. What else? Probably plenty. I mostly just hope this instagram is a place to connect with you, share my clients faces and their joy and connection in their own families, my sometimes experiments and knowledge for helping photos feel easier and also how you might take better photos in your own life. Plus like how to book me. Because obviously… 🤣 Ask anything, always. by @becmathesonphotography
Some mixed favourites from Madi and Chris’ wedding day. I LOVE a sunny wedding day. I’m also slightly mortified I haven’t shared this and it was back in August. Home from a terribly wet camping trip (but dry for pack up 🥳) which we do every year with friends. About to kick off my busiest weeks of the year with a wedding tomorrow. My sisters wedding on Friday, two families on Sunday, a commercial job on Monday and Christmas minis for both Poppies and myself. Plus school production 🤪 probably other things in there. But my brain is rested and I’m not coming off the back of shingles like I was this time last year 😆 so everything feels vastly more manageable. by @becmathesonphotography
Well this is fun! It’s been a few years since handing the reins of @birthphotographycollective over to @veronika.sanderson.photo but my love run deep even if my own opportunities to photograph birth are less these days. Still time to enter (just!) if you are a photographer working in this space. The judging system is pretty cool - judges from across the world and we work in groups of five continuously over a a few days so input is considered and varied (and doable over timezones). Judges also are permitted to enter (we obviously don’t judge our own images) and I’ve finally submitted some too - I’m truly rubbish at getting around to submitting to competitions or publications - probably should do this more! @birthphotographeroftheyear by @becmathesonphotography
November is Buarth Gurru (or Buath Garru), which is the Grass Flowering Season in the Kulin Nation. Lots of growth and activity from plants and insects. I am sitting by the Acheron river at our annual friends camping holiday and swatting away an enormous number of flies. 🤪 but it is beautiful! by @becmathesonphotography
