The Mule Ears, as people call it, is an intriguing geological feature in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park that stands out of the horizon from any vantage point across the surrounding area where they are visible, notably even from the Porch in the Terlingua ghost town. Over the years, I've amassed enough captures of the Mule Ears that I created an album just for them, some 100 fotos or more these days. It's just a rock, weathering away over eons, but I'm fascinated by its unique shape and its juxtaposition to Cerro Castalon, it's domed amigo nearby that looks like a grinning gorilla, but nobody's putting that name on a map. I heard a kid once refer to the Mule Ears as the Jedis fighting, and I've thought about that ever since. Mountains don't have names, they just exist. We can call them whatever we want. Deep thoughts on a Monday. Anyhow, please enjoy a few captures of the infamous Mule Ears over the past decade, and notice that even though everything around these eroded rhyolite dikes changes with every ray of light and drop of rain, they seem the same although still and surely, slowly vanishing over time. The last frame is, I believe, the very first foto I ever shot of the Mule Ears. (I got better) by @beerpedaler

THE WAR FOR THE RIO GRANDE // Big Bend National Park. @texasmonthly

Yesterday, a federal judge in El Paso ordered DHS to stop all construction in the big bend sector. The order states that the federal government “shall not build border barrier or related infrastructure, or engage in any construction or ground disturbing activities, in the Big Bend sector.” A huge win for the region.

I made several trips to the region throughout the process of reporting this story. It is one the last wild places in Texas and the future of the Rio Grande depends upon preserving this incredible natural landscape.

Have you ever wondered why it’s called Cigar Mountain? I sure have!

Apparently, someone looked at this mountain and decided it looked like a cigar.

Personally… I just can't see it. 😂 And I am not alone!

Standing 3,301 feet above sea level, Cigar Mountain rises above the desert, and tucked into the valley at its center is Cigar Mountain House — our place to slow down, look around, and experience the magic.

If you’d like to experience Cigar Mountain for yourself, Cigar Mountain House welcomes guests from around the world, and has a few open dates left during this gorgeous fall season.

Find availability and book your Big Bend adventure at www.cigarmountainhouse.com.

And this monsoon season? WOW. 🌧️🌈

We’ve had an incredibly active summer, and with all that rain have come more rainbows than we could possibly count.

This one appeared right over our house, and luckily 📷 Tony Drewry was there to catch it. 😍

And right now, that feels especially meaningful.

The construction of the proposed border barrier in our region is currently paused through the end of September. After months of stress, uncertainty, and watching heavy equipment move into places we love, we’ve been grateful for this little break.

But we know the pause isn’t the end of the story.

We’re anxious about what comes next. We’re tired. We’re still fighting for this place we love, and we’re trying to hold onto hope while we wait.

So for now, we’re going to keep looking up.

At the mountains.
At the stars.
At the rainbows.

And we’ll keep believing that there is still time to protect the wild places that make Big Bend so extraordinary. 🌈

Come visit, see for yourself and maybe you’ll catch a rainbow, too. ❤️
