A large non-self-portrait self portrait in representative parts. The ladle, pencil, and hand mirror have a backstory. On a child’s first birthday, Ossetian parents lay out a trove of objects on the floor. Whichever three objects the child most gravitates to are said to be reflections of that child’s identity. It’s a process in which a choice is made and, simultaneously, an existing fate reveals itself. These “choices” are faint reflections of the child from which meaning will be pulled. I’ve always liked this tradition. With a baptism a child is inducted into a sanctimonious world. But here, a child declares themselves through small harbingers of identity.
In any case, it’s cute.

This is a painting I made of my father. His name is Taymuraz, or Tomson. He's of Ossetian ethnicity and his bone structure says so. He's a Taurus and is hopelessly stubborn. He loves a few very simple things. His family, the old masters, watching bootleg action movies on DVD, whiskey. He's a prodigy of fine art and woodworking, but also all-around tinkering and inventing. He makes acoustic guitars as a hobby. The guitars are exquisite and their sound is a testament to that. A secret genius tucked away in his Brighton Beach lair. He works at Steinway & Sons restoring antique pianos. He has created tools and objects of every sort with his bare hands, from iPhone stands to nunchucks. He's often jaded, bitter, never picking up his old oil pants even though I beg him to. He introduced me to Led Zeppelin and says one of his favorite memories is taking me to a Deep Purple concert when I was eleven. The most important thing he introduced me to was fine art. I learned to paint because I was inspired by him.
I wanted to honor that, and this difficult, complicated, person who I've always struggled to understand. And so it felt obvious to me to paint his portrait.

I finally put my photos in one place for your viewing. Let’s pretend you’re looking through some albums in my living room, as we all once did in the days of yesteryear. Don’t forget, I am a romantic. Go to livingroomphotoalbums.com
If I’ve ever taken your picture, it may just be up there.
This isn’t really art, but it is really about sharing. Read the thing on the homepage.

Matt has a way of walking like he’s just out for a stroll, swaying a bit, hands in his pockets. It’s like in a city full of psychos going fast he’s the only one who’s got the right idea. The first question I asked him was, “So should we make small talk?” a bit after @matthewdonovan__ nonchalantly introduced us at a gallery and we got stuck on the bathroom line beside each other.

“Where are you from?”

“Indiana.”

We had a chat and split off. I never thought I’d see him again. But when he saw me leaving the building he followed me outside. Came over to me standing on the curb with that same stroll and asked me if I wanted to get a drink. I almost said no. A whirlwind gallery night and three hours of talking at Russian Samovar later, I practically ran away from him in the street because I had no idea what just happened.

Matt is full of paradoxes- a dude’s dude from the Midwest who writes beautifully about architecture. A college basketball loyalist who will explain Eisenman to me right now if I annoy him enough. Chaotic brain with an inclination for the unusual and interesting. His taste cuts right through what everyone else is doing and thinking, he draws no lines between high and low brow and has an incredible barometer for what’s beautiful and true. He has a poster of a hamburger truck package-taped over his bed and Miller-Eames chairs in his kitchen. Unagi for lunch and cheesy gordita crunch for dinner. He lays out my sweats for me before I get home from work. He writes about culture and built structures and knows how to catch a fish.

And he is excellent at karaoke.
