Threads of Nature • Belle Vaughan-France

Threads of Nature is both a visual archive of process and an ecological statement - an intimate yet powerful ode to sustainability and a deep connection to place.

It invites a more accessible form of foraging—one that enables anyone to create natural pigments using local, often overlooked plants, even throughout the cold winter months.

The intersection of foraging and natural dyeing fosters a renewed connection to the environment - which is especially vital in an age where we have grown increasingly
disconnected. At its core, Threads of Nature aims to offer an alternative. It becomes a quiet call to slow down, and to question the
origins of the materials we choose to wear every day. To consider the chemicals used to create these elaborate patterns and details.

Through this work, Belle hopes to offer a gentle, tactile resistance—rooted in slowness, care, and the colours of the land itself.

Truly amazing the spectrum of colours tree gives especially when simply mixed with different acids, alkali and metals

Part one of a six part collection from my ongoing project, Threads of Nature.

While recipes can be followed, there is also space for creative freedom - an invitation to play. As an artist I find joy in the unpredictability of the process as it mirrors nature’s quiet resistance to control or confrontation to uniformity.

The intersection of foraging and natural dyeing fosters a renewed connection to the environment - which is especially vital in an age where we have grown increasingly disconnected. Though rarely spoken about, the clothing industry is deeply intertwined with the gas and oil industries, making it one of the most damaging to our planet. It consumes vast resources, exploits ecosystems, and produces low-quality synthetic garments that feeds a throwaway culture.

At its core, Threads of Nature aims to offer an alternative. It becomes a quiet call to slow down, and to question the origins of the materials we choose to wear every day. To consider the chemicals used to create these elaborate patterns and details. To question whether it’s important to keep up with these ever-changing trends, at the expense of our health, children and planet. In the hope to display a different approach to fast fashion – it asks us to reconnect with the seasons and the land around us. To seek meaning over perfection. To wear with intention - through foraging, natural dyeing, and working with locally sourced fibres.

Through this work, I hope to offer a gentle, tactile resistance—rooted in slowness, care, and the colours of the land itself.

A little video I made a while ago when I spent the day in the sunshine experimenting with plants and making dyes. 🌞I used nettles to get some beautiful greens and King Alfred Cakes - something i hadn’t seen in any recipe books or online so thought i’d give it a whirl. It ended up giving a lovely stone grey, although haven’t washed it yet so not sure on the colourfastness 🤞 🌿
