Mahalia Barnes inspired incredible performances from the Caterpillar Club’s house band THE CHAMELEONS last Monday night. Blistering guitar, sax, keyboard and drum solos had not only the walk-in crowd in a frenzy of dancing and clapping but the regular Chameleons fans as well! With her powerful interpretations of some soul and rock classics Mahalia’s performance embodied what all the good guest artists bring to this unlikely Monday gig. The magic of jamming. The ability to believe in your own performance, belief in the abilities of the the musicians your playing with, and respect for the material you’re bringing to life. It’s nothing short of magic in the moment. For the band, the guest artists, the dancers and the rest of the audience, the bar staff and even the club’s doormen! As well as Mahalia’s vocals special mention must go to frontman Olley Thorpe. His vocals and guitar WERE the fire emoji in the room. Olley fortuitously has a back-up for when the flame burns too bright! Look carefully at one of his solos to see its strategic deployment!😂😂😂🍹🍹🍹 BTW the regulars are mostly accomplished students from The Con so it takes a bit to impress these guys but every Monday night Olley, Ben, Matt, Lachy, Clayton and lately Steve give a masterclass in how it’s done!! @caterpillarclubhouseband @mahaliabarnes @lewkeilar @ollie.thorpe.music @ben_isackson l by @ben_isackson
