Sekijoju Bonsia Chess Table, a commission I did for @speas_interiordesign The client wanted a sculptural piece to display their handmade chess set. We decided a root-over-rock style bonsai sculpture was the perfect fit. The base is out of wenge. The Rock is a sedimentary stone. Several days scribing the walnut so the trunk and roots fit naturally around the stone, look as organic as possible. Once the roots were scribed to the stone, I used floating tenons to attach the walnut branch blanks to the trunk, then carved the entire assembly into a bonsai form substantial enough to support the chess table. For the tabletop, I wanted to let the chess set speak for itself, so I kept things understated and used wenge again to tie the color back to the base. The top features a pull-out shelf on each side, which is handy for wine glasses and captured pieces as you play. A mirror inlaid into the surface adds a subtle touch that helps highlight the chess set itself. The whole piece came together as a beautiful sculpture and a true conversation starter. #furnituredesign #customfurniture #interiordesign #sculpture #coloradodesign #bonsai #rootoverrock #Sekijoju #woodworking by @benham_design
Furniture delivery to @redrocksco today. I had the pleasure of designing and building the dining tables and a cabinet for the Red rocks amphitheater dining room by @benham_design
This is part of my porthole series, where I create colors and patterns on metal using different chemicals.  In a sense, painting with chemical reactions. The Segmented ring is made of Wenge and accented with Padauk; the disc is steel patinated with various chemical reactions and sealed in with a clear satin coat. The sculpture hangs on a small wooden Fremch cleat #interiordesign #interiordesigner #woodworking #metalworking by @benham_design

I recently completed a project that I dubbed the"Whiskey Table." It features a drink rail to help guide your hand so you don't miss spilling your drink. I liked this project so much that I dressed up for the photo shoot! This was a collaborative project with @speas_interiordesign #interiordesign #customfurniture #coloradolife by @benham_design
Clock made from Copper Plate @benham_design knocked it out of the park with this build for us! He documented the whole process over on his YouTube channel at Brian Benham. Using our copper products, there are endless ways to be creative and to make this material look and act the way you want it to. #copper #copperplate #diy #diybuild #metalbuild #metal #ksmetals #ksprecisionmetals #brianbenham #copperclock #clock #clockcreation #patina by @benham_design

This custom-sculpted coat rack design came from wanting to Explore a new technique.  About a decade ago, I was watching a TV show called Redwood Kings.  They made crazy tree houses from redwood stumps and other salvaged Items.  While watching that show, one of the guys demonstrated how he made these crooked posts form a straight 4×4 on the bandsaw by basically turning the 4×4 inside out.  I immediately knew I wanted to try this in some kind of project.  The technique in itself is fairly simple, but coming up with a use case on how to use it in a piece of furniture was a bit of a design challenge.   So, I decided to incorporate it into a coat rack that looks like it belongs in Whoville. The coat rack is about 6 feet tall and has a footprint of about 20″ x 20″ It is made of Cherry and finished with a clear satin coat. #customfurnituredesign #customfurniture #coatrack #furnituredesign #furnitureartist #denverinteriordesign #coloradostyle by @benham_design
