POSTS STORIES REELS

Introducing LAD/W3: MUST/SEES. We totally get that 140+ events is… a lot of events. So we asked some people we know and admire to tell us what they’re most excited to see.

To kick off this new series, we started with one of our 3peat original hosts, @benjamincritton and @heidavong of @marta.losangeles.

Vince Skelly (@vince.skelly) at Antica Terra (@antica_terra), July 18 – August 31 2026.

The show opened a day after my birthday, and to say that its installation and documentation and attendant festivities (and quietude) were a gift is insufficient. Being up (t)here is such a balm, and we are treated so hospitably by our hosts-and-collaborators. We hope we can do shows like this forever.

Many thanks to Vince, Jessie, all Skellys, AT, Maggie, Rachel, Terry, Erik, Brian, Maya, Leigh, Fred, Kasia, et al.

Around Copenhagen with @marta.losangeles, a Los Angeles-based, globally-engaged art gallery. Founded in 2019, the gallery makes space for artists to experiment with the utility of design, and for designers to explore the abandonment of function.

Marta and curator Dung Ngo (@misterngo) are proud to present Knife, Fork, Spoon 3.0, an ambitious new project commissioning twelve contemporary flatware designs produced through 3D-printing, realized by some of today’s leading artists and designers.

Although 3D-printing has long been used for industrial prototyping and specialized components, its creative potential in design remains under-explored. Knife, Fork, Spoon 3.0 seeks to change that. New York-based design curator Dung Ngo and Los Angeles-based art and design gallery Marta have commissioned twelve new flatware collections from a global roster of practitioners, 3D-printed in stainless steel and presented for the first time at Ark Journal’s Design/Dialogue exhibition as part of @3daysofdesign in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Going to Aspen / Snowmass for three days (June 28 – July 01) to Anderson Ranch (@andersonranchartscenter) and beyond, and using it as an opportunity to talk very briefly about ASPEN (‘The Magazine in a Box’), which was borne from editor Phyllis Johnson’s (née Phyllis Glick) visit to the International Design Conference in Aspen (IDCA, est. 1951) in 1964. The magazine was first brought to my attention in 2009 by then-classmate Sara Hartman, who uncovered several issues in the basement archives of the Haas Arts Library in the Paul Rudolph architecture building at Yale.

Anna Gallagher-Ross (@ageearr) writes for the Walker (@walkerartcenter) Reader —

“Named after the town where it was conceived, Aspen would not resemble a run-of-the mill publication, but rather, as Glick wrote in the inaugural editorial note, a ‘storehouse,’ a multimedia magazine in a box that would house artist projects, writings, and objects, all of which demanded a new kind of reader—an active participant. Instead of a fixed format, each issue, of ten produced between 1965 and 1971, reflected the conceptual concerns of different guest editors and designers invited by Glick, who oversaw all aspects of the magazine’s production.

Aspen’s innovative and shape-shifting format defied the very notion of the mainstream magazine. It stymied many, including the US Postal Service, but was welcomed by the American art community who craved an alternative platform for experimental work. The mass-produced, ephemeral magazine format was well-suited to the conceptual art practices of the time, which eschewed the elitism of the art world gallery system in favor of reproducible, photographic, and text-based works.”

Also very excited to visit the Aspen Art Museum (@aspenartmuseum) and The Bayer Center (@thebayercenter). And other recommendations or musts are very welcome.
