Fionn is a South Brent raised, Ashburton based, queer artist with a musical journey that started right here in Totnes. They have a rapidly growing following, performing most recently at BENTWOOD festival which they curated in collaboration with Field System. This gig is the first ever full band performance of the most recent album ‘Fionn’. “Get dressed up and join us at Ashburton recreation ground, where our afternoon starts with a folk dance procession workshop by performance artist, Bronwen Wilson Rashad which will eventually wind its way through the back streets of Ashburton to Rafikis cafe. Once gathered, we’ll cross the road to St. Lawrence Chapel where Anders Duckworth will, through masquerade and dance, delve into our collective psyches and our relationship to the shapeshifting queer power of the crow. Following this are some tantalising folk tales, told by beloved Dartmoor storyteller Henry Everett before Fionn Cox-Davies shares his album of rip your guts out’ contemporary folk. Finally, we are back to Rafikis for drinks and dancing with funk/soul/disco beats from Penzance fav. DJ Kyra Norman.”

Meet the Artist: Henry Everett

@henryeverettstoryteller is a queer performance storyteller, author, artist and poet. He tells stories for all ages across the country (Crick Crack Club), sold out run of ‘Pan the Wild God is Dead’ Brighton Fringe
(2025), and can be found at festivals, schools, art centres and woodlands telling tall tales. Author of
‘Pixie Folk Tales’ a collection of 50 rascular traditional folk tales of the infamous magical characters (Illustrated by David Wyatt, published by The History Press 2025). He co runs South Devon Storytellers, and lives in Devon with his cat, Pooka.

South Brent’s own storyteller/artist/ writer (Pixie Folk Tales), Henry is our lovely host as well as our queer folkloric storyteller. He will be telling traditional tales of transformation and empowerment. He will journey us into story to meet ourselves in the magic, irreverent and spectacular nature of our queer being.

Meet the Artist: Kyra Norman

@kyra_norman_ is an artist, dancer, choreographer and DJ based in West Cornwall. In 2024, she brought a performance of ongoing work, Deep Time Moving, to Ashburton Arts, opening up conversations around dance and geology as complementary ways of experiencing place, through movement and time. Kyra is delighted to be returning to Ashburton now, to DJ for BENTWOOD. She’ll be selecting an eclectic, heartfelt mix of her most beloved funk, soul and disco tracks: stylish classics, unfamiliar wonders & fresh takes.

Kyra’s artistic practice explores movement, connection, presence and listening, in lots of different ways. Current works include Distant Dances - guided adventures in movement and dance, for all bodies that like to move; Up, Across & Along - experimental movement research, performance and play; and All In - ongoing collaboration with artist Faye Dobinson, as part of which they host All in Disco @thisis_allin . Launched in September 2024 in a beautiful old ballroom in Penzance, and already 21 parties in, their events are a reclamation of disco’ as a music-led, energised, radical, heartfelt space where difference is celebrated, freedom is felt and your style is your own.

Meet the Artist: Fionn Cox-Davies

@fionn_coxdaviesmusic is a Devon born, Ashburton based, queer artist creating idiosyncratic “rip your guts out” contemporary folk. His winding song structures, personal storytelling and broad vocal style make for deeply relatable, dynamic listening while his years of experience as an actor and contemporary dancer add subtlety and power to his performance presence.
Fionn has just recorded his debut album FIONN and been picked up by promoter Velvet Beet.

Fionn and fellow bandmate, Emily Williamson @m.rose.music will perform an intimate set in the beautiful St Lawrence Chapel to kick off his debut tour. The full band play at The Barrelhouse Totnes (June 19th) so come get a taster... up close and way too personal!

Meet the Artist: Bronwen Wilson Rashad

@bronwen_wilson_rashad is a dance artist based in the Forest of Dean. Having grown up outside the UK, her practice reflects her interests in belonging, place and folk culture. She was also one of the earliest members of the drag king folk dance group Molly No Mates (Ashburton’s May Day 2025). Recently, she was one of 6 artists to receive the Jerwood Choreographic Research Project where she researched how to create an improvised folk dance from the people, plants and place that you are. She’s also co-Artistic Director of Familia, a female led theatre company, she developed the art installation/night out called There Will Be Snacks and, for the last five years, she has led a dance project with NHS Wales Perinatal Mental Health Team called Dancing the Parenting.

‘I’m bringing some (dis)organised movement to BENTWOOD. At the start of the event we will come up with moves that reflect beautiful Ashburton and the countryside, people and creatures around it and create a procession through the town. Everyone can lead, anyone can join. I’m fascinated with how folk traditions start - an enthusiastic dancer in a pub must have kicked off clog dancing - but also how they’re presented. Instead of being something preserved, I think folk is what the folk are doing right now. So, maybe this procession is a new folk tradition born out of all of us on that particular day. What will it say about us? And can we connect with everyone else under our common sky?’

Meet the Artist: Anders Duckworth.

@andersduckworth is an artist working with dance and its intersection with the material world. Puppetry and costume play a large role in their work as they explore themes of identity, belonging and queer power.

The work they are sharing with us at BENTWOOD will be an encounter with one of the dark and transformational creatures of the forest.
Anders is a Devon-raised, British/ Swedish, Trans, non-binary choreographer and visual artist and associate artist at The Place, London. Alongside their performance work, they are a ceramicist, drawing upon their interest in capturing the traces of human touch.
