Who says field trips end in high school? 🎒

A few weeks ago, a group of M.E.T. students headed to @penumbra.inc for an up-close look at the medical technology being built right in our own backyard in Alameda. Big thanks to the Penumbra team for opening your doors and answering all of our questions! 🩺 #BerkeleyMET #BerkeleyHaas #BerkeleyEngineering by @berkeleymse

Prof. Robert Ritchie’s group discovers new metal toughening mechanisms

In Prof. Ritchie’s own words, “High temperatures are always the holy grail. And people have been saying these high-entropy alloys are going to be the next, generation material for extreme environments because they have remarkably high melting points, but previous versions are so brittle, they’re pretty hopeless. Now, we’ve made ductile versions of these alloys with high toughness over a massive range of temperatures, all the way from liquid helium temperatures, 20 kelvins, all the way up to 1,300 degrees centigrade. For any alloy, that’s interesting, and for an high entropy alloy of this type, it’s remarkable.”

Prof. Kristin Persson was recognized for pioneering data-driven materials design through first-principles computational methods and machine learning, and for founding and leading The Materials Project as a transformative global open-sciences resource. Persson has more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and over 82,000 citations. For her AI in science research, Kristin noted that “AI is not simply making an existing calculation fast. It is allowing us to ask scientific questions that were previously computationally inaccessible.”
