POSTS STORIES REELS

Today is the happiest day of my life. Besart Aliju - Bachelors of Science in Computer Science from The Grove School of Engineering.

All I can think about is how grateful I am for my family and friends. My parents Hajdar and Nadire, escaped a war torn country with my brother, Majlind, and came to this beautiful country full of opportunities not knowing a single word of English. Nothing but memories because everything else got burned down just because we were Albanian. This degree is entirely for them. All I can think about is how much they struggled to put food on me and my brothers plate and clothes on our back. I think about my Axhi Shaban who was the first to come to America who died when I was 2; I bet he’s looking down smiling now. I think about the fact my 86 year old grandma went through life not knowing how to read or even write her own name, and somehow her grandson learned how to do something so far fetched like program computers.

All I can think about is what it took. I remember mopping floors, taking out the trash and holding doors for rich people on the upper west side and feeling like most of them looked down on me. I would work the night shift, sleep in the downstairs basement, freezing cold, using my work jacket as a blanket and then go straight to class after.

All I can think about is the fact they almost kicked me out 3 times and 3 times I figured out how to convince them to let me stay. I had to write appeal letters to the board of the school explaining to them I don’t know if they know how important it is to me and my family to graduate college from America. I mean, both of my parents are from villages in Kosova where the population is less than 500 people. Graduating in NYC might as well be taking a trip to Mars.

Still, in the end, I never gave up. No matter what it took, how long it took, I knew one way or another I was gonna figure it out. To quote my favorite artist Kanye - “For me, giving up is way harder than trying.” To all who were with me along this journey, thank you so much, I got love for you that you wouldn’t believe. ❤️.
