Had a wonderful breakfast at The Mayor's Place in Nipomo at the coast. The friendliest people work there. And my meal included the best sourdough toast I've ever had in my life. It was made with the Brian's Sourdough bread, so of course I had to go buy a loaf. While trying to see if they had an Instagram account, I ran across the fact that the exterior was made by @monstercitystudios, which used to be located in Fresno. I love little finds like these. by @bethanyclough

Late post of a celebratory night out with the camera-shy husband at @mochuelofresno. Note the estate sale bracelet he bought me and omg, the salted caramel bread pudding 😋 by @bethanyclough

Another beautiful weekend morning at @wildfigkitchen in Coarsegold. by @bethanyclough

Got to @heirloom.eats a little before 11 am on Sunday. Yep, a line. Luscious chicken sandwich with pickles and a chicken plate. by @bethanyclough

Drive anywhere around the Fresno area and you’ll eventually see an empty chain pharmacy.

It’s been a year since Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy and closed more than 2,000 stores — 17 of them in the San Joaquin Valley. And at least seven locations of CVS and Walgreens have closed in Fresno alone.

So what’s happening with those stores?

Some have new renters that haven’t moved in yet. Keep reading to find out who — including a new business that wants to move into the Rite Aid on the edge of the Tower District.

Popular cafe teased 2nd Fresno spot. Owners now confirm new Fig Garden location

Otherside Cafe, a popular spot by the same people who own Saizon and Heirloom in northeast Fresno, regularly has customers lining up to get in.

Owners have been teasing a second location on the other side of Fresno on the cafe’s Instagram account, but have been coy about the exact new spot.

Thursday, owners confirmed plans to open at the corner of Palm and San Jose avenues at the entrance to the Fig Garden Financial Center. That’s just north of Fig Garden Village, behind Elbow Room and Chipotle.

It will take over a freestanding building that was once a bank and recently home to Guarantee Real Estate.

Had a really nice dinner Friday at @ovidiofresno with pasta (of course) and an orangecello cocktail. Our server, Amanda, was an absolute pro, with an easy confidence that was downright admirable. by @bethanyclough

Tokyo Garden, the classic downtown bar and restaurant that’s been empty for years, is about to get new life.

The owners of Libelula — the restaurant next door to the Crest Theatre with an eclectic menu, a pink-haired owner and a horror movie poster on the wall — will move into the empty space on Fulton Street.

Libelula was spurred to move by construction of high-speed rail. First, the parking lot across the street closed, leading to an immediate drop in customers. Then Fresno Street closed as the California High-Speed Rail Authority turns it into an underpass for the future bullet train — a project the expected to last more than a year.

The owners of Libelula, in their current spot since 2019, had been considering several spaces — including the Tower District’s Chicken Pie Shop building — but wanted to stay downtown.

Starbucks is closing 250 of its coffee shops – and two locations in prominent spots in Fresno are among them.

The Starbucks in Fig Garden Village will close, along with the one across the street from Fresno State at Shaw and Woodrow avenues.

A Starbucks at the corner of G and 23rd Street in Merced is also closing. Several locations in Sacramento are also slated to close. Each of the locations’ last day will be Saturday. Closing stores will have notices posted this weekend, according to the company.

My job is safe, but many of my co-workers' jobs are not. It's a sad day for journalism in Fresno. Please donate to help them out. The link to the GoFundMe is in my bio.

Repost from @thefresnobeeguild: The Fresno Bee Guild learned on Sept. 10 six reporters, a photojournalist and an editor will be laid off from The Bee within a few weeks. That’s nearly half of our staff.

Some of these reporters have children, spouses or others who rely on them. Others will be losing their sole income after these mass layoffs made by McClatchy, the hedge-fund backed owner of The Bee.

These award-winning journalists have worked for years or even decades covering the San Joaquin Valley, including government and police accountability, underprivileged communities, local schools, development and a slew of other topics.

We work in these roles because we believe journalism is important in the community we live in and are passionate about covering. We still have that fervor for local journalism.

When your friends throw a ball -- a ball-shaped food party, that is -- and you don't really feel like cooking, you get creative and bring the ball -shaped crudités in a little pepper train. So much good food. Thanks to @paprbck and wifey for hosting. by @bethanyclough
