Give me 32,000 square feet and a good room flip, and I’m very happy. Morgan Manufacturing is one of those venues where the possibilities immediately start running through my head. The industrial architecture gives the space so much character, while its size and flexibility leave plenty of room to create an experience that feels entirely different from one wedding to the next. I absolutely love how we set the ceremony in the large room and then send guests to cocktail hour while we completely transform the room for the reception. When they return, they’re walking back into the same space, but it shouldn’t feel like the same room. A transformation of that scale requires an incredibly skilled vendor team and a very well-orchestrated plan behind the scenes. When everyone knows exactly what needs to happen in that window of time, the result is one of my favorite things to watch: guests walking back in and realizing just how much has changed. Morgan Manufacturing gives us the space to think big. And I’m always happy to take advantage of it. I’ve never been interested in building the biggest planning company in Chicago. I’ve always been more interested in building something I could stand behind. When I first started, I didn’t have a five-year plan or a blueprint for growth. What I had was experience in shaping environments, understanding people, and knowing how details affect the way a room feels. Over time, I realized the work I care about most isn’t just the visible result. It’s the dynamic behind it. The trust with a couple who doesn’t quite know where to begin. The collaboration with creative partners who know I’ll be clear, prepared, and fair. The steady leadership that keeps a complex day feeling grounded. I take on fewer events by design. It allows me to stay closely involved, protect the experience, and work alongside professionals I genuinely respect. Sixteen years in, I’m less concerned with scale and more concerned with substance. That’s the business I meant to build. I don’t believe there is one definition of what a wedding “should” look like. Every couple comes to me with a different story. They have relationships that matter deeply to them, family dynamics I need to understand, traditions they want to honor, and sometimes traditions they want to approach differently. My job begins with listening. I want to understand what holds meaning for you before we start deciding how that meaning will show up in the celebration. There should never be an assumption that something belongs in your wedding simply because it has always been done that way. Who you are should have a place in every conversation we have, and you should always feel comfortable bringing your whole self to the planning process. The wedding day matters, but so does everything it takes to get there. My couples spend months planning a celebration that means so much to them, and I never want those months to feel like something they simply have to get through before they can enjoy the wedding.* There will always be decisions to make and unexpected things that come up along the way. My hope is that through all of it, my couples feel supported, confident in the people around them, and able to enjoy this season of their lives for what it is. Reading words like these means more to me than I can say because the experience we create together has always mattered just as much to me as the celebration itself. * Did John and I take a @soulcycle class together once or twice before a meeting? You bet! 🚴🏻‍♀️🕯️ Planning: @bethbernstein.events Photography: @maypolestudios by @bethbernstein.events
Hiring a full service planner comes with a lot of things to consider, but it really comes down to who can bring you peace of mind. You’re inviting someone into a very important season of your life and having deep conversations with them about your family, your finances, and your hopes and dreams. We understand that this isn’t always easy and we take that responsibility seriously and with care. I don’t plan weddings the same way I did 10 years ago. And I wouldn’t want to. Earlier in my career, I paid so much attention to what was happening around me: what other planners were doing, the trends couples were finding on Pinterest and Instagram, and what I “thought” defined a beautiful wedding. 17 years into my career, I’m in a very different headspace. I trust my instincts more. I have a clearer sense of what truly contributes to the experience we’re creating, and I’m more comfortable telling a couple when I think something doesn’t work for their wedding, even if it’s what everyone else is doing. The industry will continue to evolve. Styles will change, expectations will shift, and there will always be something new competing for our attention. I hope I keep changing with it, too, while staying grounded in my own instincts and not letting outside opinions steer the way. ✨ I’m curious: Do you think experience makes you more open to change, or more confident in knowing what you don’t need to change? A venue with more than one setting changes how I think about the entire day. Cafe Brauer @tigerlilyevents in Lincoln Park offers several distinct spaces, each with its own character and each suited to a different part of the celebration. From a planning perspective, that variety lets us design the day as a sequence rather than a single scene. Guests move from one setting to the next, and the change in atmosphere gives every part of the day its own moment. The key is making those transitions feel effortless. Where guests are directed, how much time they have in each space, and what is ready for them when they arrive all shape the experience, even though no one should notice the work behind it. Café Brauer gives us the pieces. The planning is what turns them into a day that flows. I love when a couple comes to me with an idea they’re excited about, especially when they aren’t quite sure how to make it happen. You don’t need to have all of those answers. Bring me what you’re thinking, and we can talk through what it would take to make it work for your wedding. That conversation is one of my favorite parts of the process. 🤍 Planning: @bethbernstein.events Photography: @kerricarlquist Floral: @thistleandplume Venue: @morgan.mfg Entertainment: @arlenmusicproductions by @bethbernstein.events
After 17 years of planning events, I’ve learned a few non-negotiables. When you’ve done this for as long as I have, I always want what’s best for you. Sometimes that comes with conversations that may be hard to hear. That distinction matters. There are decisions that may seem insignificant in isolation, but they have a very different impact once you see the entire event come together. Experience has taught me what elevates a event, what deserves our attention, and where cutting a corner simply won’t cut it. There are times when sticking to the plan matters, and there are times when reading the room matters more. No matter how much we prepare, a wedding day has a rhythm of its own, and as an experienced professional, I welcome and embrace that. There are moments that need to move forward and others that are better left alone. Being able to recognize the difference is part instinct and part experience. The timeline is there to guide us. It should never keep us from recognizing when something wonderful is already happening. What do you do when a venue’s freight elevator breaks three days before the wedding and can’t be fixed for another 10? You pivot (cue Ross Geller). This scenario played out at the Chicago Cultural Center. Built in the 1890s as Chicago’s first permanent central public library, it was outfitted with (very) small passenger elevators. But our 21st Century wedding was still going to happen. A 10 a.m. load-in became a 4 a.m. load-in, the number of staff more than doubled, and a custom, VERY heavy, mirrored Chuppah was carried up three flights of stairs. When I did bring this to my client’s attention, I was able to tell them not only what happened, but exactly how we were going to handle it. Problems are inevitable in events, but causing anxiety for my clients is never an option. And to paraphrase Vanilla Ice: if there’s a problem, I’ll solve it.
