When squeezing to the edge of the road is not enough!

Gunnedah was the next stop on last month's road trip, a town with a population under ten thousand people, on the way between Tamworth and Narrabri.
Dorothea Mackellar wrote her famous poem "My Country" about her family farm in the area, and the silo's artwork in the first photo honour her memory, followed by views of the town from Pensioners Hill in the 2nd and 3rd photos, down to the town in the next two photos, then views of and from Gunnedah Museum at the old water tower.

Most photos taken with a Samsung S25 phone camera.

Three weeks ago I started a road trip in country New South Wales. First stop overnight at the Currabubula Campground, south of Tamworth, followed by two nights in a city's motel.
I was startled when I spotted a "Female Sale" large sign on the road, but soon saw the next sign and understood what it was all about.
Tamworth is a large country town with a population exceeding sixty thousand people and famous for its country music festival.
So, this was the start of a twelve day trip.
More to come soon.

This is a two-minute short film created as part of the Moving Image course in the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree I am currently undertaking at UNSW.

The film explores memory and dreams, challenging our conventional ideas of linear time.

It was shot on a Canon R5, with the soundtrack recorded using a Zoom H5studio digital hand-held digital recorder.

More to come in the near future.

Some photos from last night's Vivid Festival in Sydney, thanks to James for organising and leading the Meetup through the Amateur Sydney Photographers Group, and for the group's friendly company.

The first photo from the Argyle Cut at The Rocks; the next three of the Opera House seen from the Overseas Terminal; next the Garrison Church at Dawes Point and the last two at Circular Quay.

All photos taken hand-held, f/2.8, shutter speeds varying from 1/10 sec to 1/60 sec, with a Canon R5 and 28-75mm lens.

Visited Gulgong last week, some 300km northwest of Sydney.

It was a bustling town through the gold mining boom in the 19th century and many of the buildings are pretty well preserved.

My furthest stay on last October's road trip was Kangaroo Island.

It is much larger than I imagined, at 145 km of length, sitting 13 km off the South Australian coast, which you reach on a 50 minute, quite expensive ferry trip: it cost just short of 400 dollars for the return trip with a small car.

It is quite a unique location with great landscapes, well preserved natural habitats and a population under five thousand people.

From Menindee, I drove to Waikerie, in South Australia with the objective of visiting Gluepot Reserve, which is managed by Birdlife Australia.

Having slept the night before in the improvised bed in the car, splurging on a villa at the Waikerie Golf Course was a welcoming reward (second photo).

Driving from Waikerie to Gluepot takes about an hour and a half, some 65 km, taking the ferry to cross the Murray River, then Goyder Highway and a further 50 km of unsealed roads, starting on Lunn Road, then going through a gate (fifth photo) and crossing private property.

This was a reconnaissance visit to map things out in preparation for a couple of overnight stays on the return trip, which was well worth it, as Gluepot is a top birdwatching spot in Australia.

Menindee would be my next stop after leaving Tibooburra, on last October's road trip.

Menindee has a population of some 500 people, home to a number of lakes, one of them being Pamamaroo Lake, where free camping is available on its shores.

I had never before experienced staying overnight in the car, so this was an exciting opportunity, even though some anxiety was associated with it.

Dropping forward the back seats to level up with the storage area made up for a comfortable bed, and experiencing sunset and sunrise by the lake was priceless!

This was my last stop in New South Wales, before crossing into South Australia.

Tibooburra, population 150 people, 330 km north of Broken Hill, was my next stop on last October's road trip.

Considered the most isolated town in New South Wales, it has a unique frontier feeling to it.

Driving on the Silver City Highway, I came for the first time with a section that doubles as road and plane runway (the third photo), while the beauty of the immense open spaces, magnificent skies and sheer isolation makes the experience so special.

Stayed 3 nights in Broken Hill on my last road trip, some 450 km west of Cobar and 1,140 km from Sydney, with a population of over 17,000 people.

It is a mining town, with massive silver, lead and zinc deposits, established in the 1880's.

During that stay also visited Silverton, 25 km away.

While in there I received a surprise birthday present from a couple of strangers from Maitland: a fly screen, which was most useful, as flies swarm all over you, entering the nostrils, sitting between eyes and glasses and around the lips.

Wilcannia was my next brief stop when travelling from Cobar to Broken Hill.

The second photo, the Barrier Highway, on the way to Wilcannia.

Located some 950 km northwest of Sydney, with a population of around 750 people, Wilcannia was in 1890 a thriving town of around 3 thousand people and 13 pubs, the third largest port in NSW, behind only Sydney and Newcastle. Some 90 steamers used the port on the Darling River.

The town is famous for its sandstone buildings, such as the gaol, courthouse and post office, seen on the left, in this photo.
