Do you look static when you ski? Try the Skate turn drill or otherwise known as 1000 steps drill.

I call it the skate turn drill because the best results come from when the skier try’s to emulate feelings of skating around a carved turn not stepping around a turn.

This drill had some great outcomes for the students I was coaching last week at Thredbo on a Big Picture Skiing Camp. Their turn shape improved, their stance improved and they were able to get the feeling of building pressure throughout the turn.

I love going into the details of ski drills as there is always a few specific feelings that have great crossover into your skiing. If you are skiing let us know in the comments if you get to try out this drill.

And if you love improving your skiing then I have longer more detailed videos that build your skill base, solve your ski problems and make you a better skier. You can try out the Big Picture Skiing difference for FREE for 7 days. Just google Big Picture Skiing or checkout the links in the @bigpictureskiing bio. by @bigpictureskiing

Have you listened to the Big Picture Skiing Podcast?
If you have what was your favorite episode?
If you haven’t find it on apple podcast and Spotify.

My favorites from the show so far include:
- Sasha Rearick on constraints based learning
- Erik Schlopy on ski racing setup and his favorite ski drills
- Lou Rosenfeld and his research on binding placement
- The many insightful boot fitting episodes with Brent Amsbury
- Jurij Franko developer of the first shaped ski.

And don’t forget to subscribe to the show as there are new episodes released regularly. by @bigpictureskiing

My content from the past 20 years would fill the equivalent of 50 ski technique books! So what I did instead was train a digital mind to help my members improve their skiing.

This is different from chat gpt and Claude because it is only trained on what I’ve taught it. If you ask it how to carve like me it won’t make up an answer based on what it’s scraped from the internet, it will answer and refer you to the hundreds of videos on the Big Picture Skiing platform.

This premium feature is only available to current members of Big Picture Skiing.

Grab your popcorn - this one’s an emotional rollercoaster 🍿

Our social media manager, Rosie, set herself a challenge: improve her short turns with the help of Tom Gellie @bigpictureskiing and Carv.

She started on a Ski:IQ of 125, with a goal of 140 (and a few sleepless nights along the way 😅).

After working on her tempo and edge set, she hit 142 on the last run 💪

Let’s give Rosie @rosiealexmills some love in the comments ❤️‍🔥

Last time you’ll see this backdrop in my videos. I am moving out! Thanks for everyone that has followed by channel and videos and ski instruction over the years. Here’s to a brighter better home office space! by @bigpictureskiing

A common mistake when people pole plant is mostly holding their poles with their 1st finger. I find that if you grip lightly the pole with all fingers and especially the 5th (pinky) finger you get a stronger connection to your core. Same goes for doing a chin up at the gym. The pinky helps connect your hand to the strong latissimus dorsi muscle on your back.

Try it and feel for yourself the difference 💪🏼

I’m a massive ski nerd. I love all these details about skiing technique. It means I find enjoyment on snow no matter if conditions are bad or excellent.

I make skiing tutorials for a living and share my expertise through the biggest video technique library on the internet. Check it out through the link in @bigpictureskiing bio.

Apparently, it’s what’s underneath that matters. 😂

No, not me. My base layers!

Thermals and ski socks aren’t exactly the easiest things to make exciting content about. You can’t really see them when I’m skiing, and I’m not sure anyone needs a photo of me standing around in my underwear. But here we are.

The truth is, thermals and socks all do a pretty similar job. What I like about Le Bent is how they feel. Their base layers blend merino wool with rayon made from bamboo, which gives them a very soft, almost silky feel against your skin.

And don’t just take my word for it. Next time you see Le Bent in a shop, have a feel for yourself. Don’t just look at them. Touch them!

Sometimes, you don’t need a massive technical advantage or a revolutionary new product. You just appreciate something that feels really nice to wear. And when it’s the layer sitting right next to your skin all day, that matters to me.

The socks must be pretty good too, because my wife is still wearing a pair she bought 15 years ago!

I wanted to give @lebent_ a shout-out in a way that wasn’t just another standard sponsored post. I genuinely appreciate their support over the years, and I’ve loved wearing their gear.

So thanks, Le Bent, for keeping me comfortable out there, and for letting me be me 😂

The best time is now! ⛷️

There’s something great about starting your ski season with a camp. A chance to get back on snow, reconnect with your skiing, and set yourself up for a great winter.

It’s about setting the right goals, challenging old habits, and building better moving patterns that will carry you through the season.

I’m excited to have Sebastien Baribeau @seb_baribeau ,former member of the Canadian Ski team, joining me to kick off the season in December at Panorama. We’d love to have you join us!

Check out upcoming camps at TrueMotionski.com.

Do you know that your ski binding angle affects your stance and balance? I’ve felt this before and even the difference of 1 degrees is noticeable.

Knowing what the angles are of your equipment can help you with consistency if you’re a skilled skier and with an intermediate, can help you find a much more stacked home position.

I’ve seen people with big calves suddenly ski much better and others with skinny calves drive the front of their skis when this binding angle is optimized.

These are just some small snippets from a full deep dive on how angles in your ski boots need to considered for optimal skiing. Big thanks to @skitalkdotcom founder Phil for sharing this information.

If you know a friend that may benefit from this post send it their way and let’s help more people find their perfect ski boot setup.

Tom,
Big Picture Skiing by @bigpictureskiing

If I fly for a ski trip my boots always travel carry on with me. Here’s why:
- I’ve had delayed luggage for up to 3 days and my feet hurt in the boots I borrowed.
- I’ve spent many hours fitting these boots to be perfect. I love how they ski.
- ski boots take up premium check in baggage space and weight.

I’ve had this boot bag for three years now, it’s held up to a lot of use. It’s practical and saved me money and ski time in the long run. My ski bag has been lost 3 times in the last 3 years. I can borrow skis off friends or rent if need be, but once you own your own boots you know you’ll never go back to renting.

I recommend this bag highly to any skier or boarder that flys.

Did you spot the difference? 👇

❌ Top video - leaning in drops your shoulders and hand, and puts too much pressure on your inside ski.

✅ Bottom video - maintaining upper-lower body separation allows you to balance over your outside ski, helping your skis carve.

@bigpictureskiing shows how you can work on upper-lower body separation with one simple drill. This will help you feel more balanced when carving. 💪

Check your Edging Similarity and Parallel Skis metrics in the Carv app to track your progress.

Save this post for your next trip! 🎿
