The Writers' Union Building in Dushanbe, Tajikistan

The facade of the Writers' Union building, known as "the Wall," features nine niches holding eleven life-size statues of Tajikistan's greatest literary figures.

At the centre stands Rudaki, the 8th-century father of Persian poetry, alongside Ferdowsi, Omar Khayyam, Sadriddin Ayni, and Mirzo Tursunzoda.

Designed by architect Eduard Salikhov in the early 1980s, the building is a fine example of Soviet Modernist architecture in Central Asia, combining monumental scale with local sensibilities.

In the adjacent garden, a statue depicts Ayni in conversation with Maxim Gorky.

Near Vahdat, Tajikistan, along the historic M41 highway, this striking bus stop from the Tajik SSR (1960s–80s) blends socialist modernism with Central Asian craftsmanship.

Its pebble mosaics in ochre, brown, and cream feature mandalas, floral scrolls, and geometric patterns inspired by Suzani embroidery, all set against a brutalist concrete frame with a sculptural flower centerpiece.

Known locally as Neftyanik, this well-preserved relic showcases how rural Soviet infrastructure became a canvas for artistic freedom.

This brutalist bus stop near Vahdat, Tajikistan, stands along the historic M41 on an elevated concrete platform framed by the surrounding landscape.

Its single-piece reinforced-concrete canopy cantilevers forward to provide shade, its sculptural form reflecting the modernist ambitions of late Soviet infrastructure. What sets the structure apart is its full mosaic cladding: both interior and exterior surfaces are covered in detailed tile work of concentric circles, floral motifs, and geometric patterns drawn from Central Asian textile traditions such as suzani.

The palette is warm and earthy ochre, crimson, cream, dark brown, with accents of sage green and gold.

During the Soviet period, local artists and architects were given creative freedom to design regional bus stops, producing a body of standalone works that fused modernist concrete with regional folk art a unique category of public art later brought to international attention by Christopher Herwig's Soviet Bus Stops series.

Deep in the Khatlon District stands this striking memorial to the Great Patriotic War. A massive stone soldier's head in helmet watches over a pink tufa wall etched with the years 1941–1945, silhouette cutouts of charging troops, and the words every post-Soviet memorial shares:

«НИКТО НЕ ЗАБЫТ, НИЧТО НЕ ЗАБЫТО» "No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten."

Except… the eternal flame is out.
A monument built to keep memory burning forever, now sitting quietly with its flame cold.

A glimpse into the cultural heart of Nurek (Norak), Tajikistan

The Қасри Фарҳанг, or Palace of Culture. A classic example of Soviet-era modernist architecture, with its bold glass-grid facade and wide flat roof, this building has long served as the central hub for community gatherings, public forums, regional competitions, and artistic celebrations in the city.

Above the entrance, a banner carries a proud slogan: "Фарҳанг — ҳастии миллат аст" "Culture is the existence of the nation." Flanked by a golden lyre and decorative emblems, it's a reminder of how deeply art and identity are woven together here.

Inside, the walls tell their own stories. One painting marks 23 February National Army Day (Рӯзи Артиши Миллӣ), commemorating the founding of Tajikistan's independent Armed Forces in 1993, with roots reaching back to the Soviet-era Defender of the Fatherland Day.

Hand-painted figures, reliefs, and pottery fill the halls and tucked into a corner of the grand gathering hall, even a small miniature of the Nurek Dam stands on display, a tribute to the world's tallest embankment dams and a symbol of local pride.

Swipe to explore the murals, reliefs, and details of this remarkable pslace.

On the facade of the former "Vakhsh" Cinema (кинотеатр Вахш) in Nurek, Tajikistan stands this mosaic a muscular human figure caught mid stride, rendered entirely from thousands of light-colored pebbles and natural stone tesserae.
Built in 1964, the cinema was designed by architect A. Makukha, with mosaic artwork by A. Amindzhanov, N.A. Maksimova, and Y.N. Skazochkin.

It's a classic example of Soviet Modernism/Brutalism raw, unadorned concrete paired with expressive public art.

The textured rubble stone technique you see here was a hallmark of monumental decorative art across the Central Asian Soviet Republics in the 1960s–70s, blending ideological themes with local, natural materials.

The stylized circular symbols in the upper corner echo solar, industrial, and scientific energy.
