When you’re trying to make better choices, the last thing you need is to spend hours decoding labels, questioning claims and wondering what’s really behind a product. At Biome, we ask the nitty gritty questions for you. We look beyond the front of the packet and see through the greenwash. We question ingredients, materials and the whole story behind a product. 🌿 Where was it made, and how? 🔎 What is it made from, and are the ingredients and materials safe? 🤝 Who made it, and were they treated fairly? 🐰 Is it genuinely cruelty free? 🌏 What impact will using it have? ♻️ Is it reusable, and how long will it last? 🗑️ What happens at the end of its life? And we don’t expect every product to be perfect. Sometimes, the better choice isn’t black and white. That’s why we dig deeper, ask for the information manufacturers don’t always make easy to find, and give you the full story. That way you can make informed choices that feel right for you. Welcome to Biome. We’ve done the research. Now you can shop with confidence 🌿 by @biomestores

Banned in EU, NZ and China, but 👍 to sell in Oz! I’m used to being surprised by what brands get away with, but it’s super annoying when Australian regulators are not keeping up with the known health hazards for certain chemicals. Like Naphthalene moth balls. China banned these way back in 1993! The EU in 2008. NZ in 2014. These bans reflect long held recognition of the dangers of naphthalene exposure, particularly its potential to cause respiratory issues, hemolytic anemia, and as a possible human carcinogen. Yet, in Australia these solid pesticide balls sit in thousands of homes evaporating into a toxic gas right into the air you’re breathing. The kicker for me is that Australian brands are getting them made in China (where they are considered too toxic to be sold) and importing here to poison us! 🤷‍♀️ While we wait for regulators and brands like Brunnings and Hovex to catch up, choose natural moth repellents instead. Essential oils can do a great job of deterring moths and silverfish from your clothes (that's why we stock them at Biome). And, what about all the pollution from those single use plastic holders!? 😩 Each time the moth balls evaporate they are useless! Comment MOTHBALLS to read our deep dive & why we choose these safer options every time. by @biomestores

Not all exfoliating towels are created equal. And some might be bringing more plastic into your bathroom than you realise! Many popular Japanese-style exfoliating towels are made using synthetic materials like polyester and nylon. These are plastic-based fibres that can shed tiny plastic particles during everyday use, sending them down the drain and into our waterways. So, what can you choose instead? ✨ Look for exfoliating cloths and body scrubbers made from natural fibres. At Biome, we love the Sasawashi range, made using Washi paper and Kumazasa yarn. "I’m loving this sasawashi open weave exfoliating towel. It’s long enough and perfect for cleaning my back, is gentle but effective and dries really quickly." – Jacqui "Love it. It suds up easily, easy to use and most importantly it dries quickly. Will be buying more of these for spare bathroom and gifts." - Annette ⭐ Buy any 2 Sasawashi cloths, get 10% off. Buy any 3, get 20% off. Discount applies automatically. Not valid with other discounts. Discover more thoughtfully sourced, plastic-free alternatives at Biome. We find the clever little problem-solvers that make everyday swaps easier. by @biomestores
Your chopping board could be adding more than just chopped vegetables to your meals. 👀 Research has identified plastic chopping boards as a potentially significant source of microplastic exposure, with particles released during everyday food preparation and potentially transferred into the food we eat. And why should we care about that from a gut health perspective? Emerging research is exploring how microplastic exposure may influence: • Gut microbiome composition • Intestinal barrier integrity • Inflammatory pathways within the gut A 2025 study even found that mice exposed to microplastics released from chopping boards experienced changes in their gut microbiota, with polypropylene exposure also associated with intestinal inflammation and impaired gut barrier function. And when we talk about gut health, we can’t ignore the gut–skin connection. The gut microbiome plays an important role in immune regulation and skin health, including conditions like eczema. While we can’t yet say that microplastics cause eczema, it’s another reason to keep investigating how our everyday environment may influence our health. One simple kitchen swap I’ve made? Switching to a wooden chopping board. I picked up my wooden chopping board from @biomestores , and it’s one of those small changes that makes me feel a little better about what we’re bringing into our kitchen. It’s not about eliminating every possible exposure (that’s impossible!), but being mindful of the little things we can control. Research: Yadav et al. (2023).
