BFA + Immigrant Kitchen has a ‘zine 📖!

Do you like to hold something in your hands when you read it? Something that doesn’t have buttons 📱or screens? We do too!

So we created issue #1 of our ‘zine, Matriarch.

Matriarch is filled with some of our favorite stories highlighting the women behind our dinners and events.

Stories include profiles of BFA co-host Richnie Phann from Cambodia, Indigenous migrants rights activists Odelia Romero & Poncho Marinez; essays about why we do what we do, writings by Sean Sherman, an interview with James Beard award-winning author Michael Shaikh, poetry by co-host Maryan Abdinur and friend of BFA Jeremy Moran, recipes + gorgeous full-color photography by Uche Iroegbu, + more !

Want one? Yes! You want one. These make excellent gifts too.

To order, go to the link 🔗 in bio!

“We are family now”
“My family eats something similar!”
“I feel so honored to hear their story.”
“This helps me better connect to my newcomer students”

These are a few overheard quotes from our last Immigrant Kitchen event where in addition to great food, great conversation and a great party, we lean into impact work like bridging, connection, and empowerment.

Check back this week for information on our first event back in early March! We would love to be connected to you ❤️

Thanks to @onibaba.studio and Susana Morales for the graphic note taking.

Immigrant Kitchen desserts 🍮 and sweet treats are always from scratch, passed down from grandmothers for generations. You can taste 👅 the love. Grandma’s sweets are better.

Thank you to the beautiful Fatima for bringing your warmth, your story of women’s strength 💪 and perseverance in hardship, and of course your culinary stylings.

We are ever grateful to the women of Immigrant Kitchen who bring their cultural legacy stories through cooking 🥘.

At the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to shout out and honor our kitchen support team, Laura, Janet, Christina— Mexican women who are our backbone.

Without them, we can’t do what we do. Women like them tend to be out of sight. They are the ones who slice and dice, chop and mop, sweep and clean, and keep most restaurants churning day after day, with very little attention or limelight.

At Immigrant Kitchen, we spotlight women like Christina, because without them, we truly are nothing.

Let’s give them the flowers 💐 🌺🌸they deserve. Immigrants make America great.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month from all of us at BFA + Immigrant Kitchen!

This year, we have added oral histories to our storytelling roster. This provides our cooks with another platform to have their stories, told through the lens of food, presented in their own voice— one of the missions of BFA + Immigrant Kitchen!

Check out our first story, about co-founder and director @meccabos and our Kitchen Manager @tesstify13.

They staged our first post-ICE surge dinner early this year, telling their story of biracial identity through their cooking, and now this story.
