A special visitor to lutruwita/Tasmania: the blue-winged parrot. 💙💚 While many aspects of the movements of this vulnerable bird are poorly understood, there is a definite passage of blue-winged Parrots to and from Tasmania. They arrive around August to begin breeding, and leave again in March/April. Some will over-winter in Tasmania or on the Bass Strait islands.

Have you seen a blue-winged parrot this season?

We are lucky to have some beautiful birds endemic to lutruwita/Tasmania, and the green rosella is a firm favourite for many. It is easy to understand why! Green rosellas can be found in most Tasmanian habitats; often alerting you to their presence with their distinctive call.

What is your favourite Tassie endemic?

5 things you can do during H5 Bird flu 🪶

Seemingly small actions, like knowing the signs of bird flu, donating to conservation groups, and supporting @birdlifeoz 's call for a $200 million wildlife resilience package can help stymie any feelings of powerlessness. Best of all, we encourage you to keep birdwatching. Connect with your local birds and remember why their protection matters!

One of the most-loved of our 12 endemic birds is the piyura / Tasmanian native hen. They are resourceful and adaptable, as well as fairly plentiful around the island (often people coming here to see endemic Tasmanian birds will see piyura first!) They are dedicated parents and form strong family bonds. Strong swimmers, fast runners (up to 50km per hour!), social and sometimes loud: we simply love piyura (pronounced pee-oo-rah").

The Hooded Plover Count aims to ensure hooded plovers persist in healthy numbers into the future, by alleviating threats to breeding birds, so as to improve their breeding success. The count aims to ensure that critical habitat is identified, protected and where quality has degraded (e.g. through weed infestations), restored.

To register for the Hooded Plover count, please sign up as a BirdLife Australia volunteer on the Beach-nesting Birds Hub website (link in bio) and choose the ‘Hooded Plover Population (Biennial) Count Volunteer’ role. You will need to complete an online induction under the 'My Courses' tab which provides comprehensive guidelines for the survey, followed by a quiz on shorebird ID, animal welfare, coastal vegetation, threats and data entry. An online training workshop will also be held for signed up volunteers 5 November at 11:30 - 1:00 AEDT.

Perhaps you counted THIS bird in the #aussiebirdcount last week? The grey fantail - sometimes known (affectionately) as the cranky fan. You might experience them coming quite close to you on the trails as they try to catch flushed insects flying around you 🪰

If you've been counting birds this week for the Aussie Bird Count, you may have seen or heard this unique species: the shining bronze cuckoo. They are a migratory bird who visit Tasmania from August, singing their repetitive "coo-coo-coo-coo" call through the forests. They are also a parasitic brooder, laying their eggs in the nests of fairy-wrens, scrubwrens and thornbills.

Which of our cuckoo species have you seen or heard this #aussiebirdcount ?

We had a beautiful morning with the Kingborough Council and @pacific_black_duck Conservation Group for our Introduction to Birdwatching event. Thank you to all who came along and picked up a pair of binoculars, asked questions and simply enjoyed spotting a number of our local birds including welcome swallows, Australian wood ducks, masked lapwings, eastern rosellas, musk lorikeets, pied cormorants and more.

The Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) is facing significant budgetary cut backs and the lost of important jobs which support conservation of Tasmania's natural values. The Tasmanian National Parks Association has posted a petition to urge parliament to maintain funding for our vital PWS and redirect funds from the unpopular and unnecessary development of the Tyndall Range walk.

This petition can only be signed by Tasmanian residents.

Link to the petition is in our stories, or DM us for a link (Instagram is currently not allowing us to add another link to our bio) by @birdlifetasmania

It's shorebird nesting season across the coastlines of lutruwita/Tasmania 🥚

@tasmaniaparks recently shared a post with some helpful information on how you can take simple steps to protect our vulnerable shorebirds:

Stick to walking on wet sand below the high tide mark 👣

Keep your distance from nesting birds 📏

Keep dogs on a lead and away from nesting areas 🚫🐾

Avoid driving on nesting beaches 🚫🚐

Leave seaweed and beach materials where they are 🪸

Dispose of waste responsibly 🗑️
