Paul Goldschmidt has quietly been a top 10 player in the last decade of our sport, as he continues to put together a hall of fame resume. How many more seasons of elite Goldy will we get? #STLCards by @birdsofthelou

Today, we look at Cardinals’ backstop for the last 18 years: Yadier Molina. Yadi is considered overrated by some baseball fans, and admittedly, if you’re looking at his offensive stats, they do lack compared to catchers in the hall of fame. However, Yadi isn’t going into the hall of fame for his bat work (although a career 98 wRC+ for a catcher is pretty good), he’s going in for being the best defensive player in MLB history. This post is to show just how good Yadier Molina has been defensively while playing the most important defensive position in baseball and hopefully show that if anything, Yadi is underrated as a field general. Note that on the second slide, Molina is the all time leader in Defensive Value.

Here are some key stat definitions:
FRM (Framing): Framing stats measure how many runs catchers save based on how many extra strikes they are able to get for their pitcher.
-
rCERA (Catcher ERA Runs Saved): Refers to how well a catcher handles a pitching staff.
-
rSB (Stolen Bases Above Average): This stat measures, in runs, how a catcher compares to the average catcher in terms of preventing stolen bases, accounting for the fact that the best way to prevent a steal is to prevent the runner from attempting it.
-
DRS (defensive runs saved): quantifies a player's entire defensive performance by attempting to measure how many runs a defender saved. It takes into account errors, range, outfield arm and double-play ability.

Just how good was prime Albert Pujols? From 2001-2011, the Machine never hit below .300, hit less than 30 home runs, or drove in less than 100 RBI. He was the first player in MLB history to do that. Before Mike Trout, Pujols was undoubtedly the best player in baseball. The game had never seen someone so consistently good. In this post, take a look at what number Pujols would put up on average and then take a look at him compared to Mike Trout.
Note: Based on FanGraphs positional adjustments, the positional difference between 1B and CF runs wise is 15, so Trout and Pujols are roughly the same value fielder. Trout is also a very good base runner, with a career 61.2 BsR compared to Pujols’ 3.4 BsR from 2001-11. This explains the difference in fWAR/150. #STLCards

YES YES YES by @birdsofthelou

David Freese received 95% of 50,900 votes and is now officially the 89th inductee into the Hall of Pretty Good, earning Inner Circle honors! @davidfreese by @birdsofthelou

David Freese turned down an invitation to be inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame, but I’d like to think he’d enjoy being in the Hall of Pretty Good. Despite the efforts of Rangers fans, Freese sits at 95% of 34,400 votes.

If you haven’t already voted you can do so in the caption of my pinned post. We’ll see you tomorrow night to figure out if Freese can hang onto Inner Circle HoPG honors. by @birdsofthelou
