POSTS STORIES REELS

Hi friends! My name is Sarah & I think it’s probably time for an intro post.

The long story short(ish)..I dropped out of art school (with only 2 classes to go 😅) after getting married & pregnant with our first baby. I planned to go back..but I never did. Outside of 1 class while pregnant with our second, I didn’t touch clay for about 10 years.

Last year I took another ceramics class with my partner & it changed everything. Now thanks to my incredible family, I have a home studio & my first kiln 🥹 I honestly still can’t believe it.

On this account I’m going to be mainly documenting getting back into ceramics but I may also post other art projects I’m working on. I don’t really know what I’m doing, but I’m doing it anyway.

If you read this far, thank you! Here’s some throw back photos from college when I first discovered ceramics & one from way back when I got my first (toy) wheel. 🫶🏻

Finally made it to the wheel late last night to try my hand at throwing a little pumpkin! I definitely overworked it, but throwing a closed form is a fun challenge!

Post-market behind the scenes. Lots of cleaning, organizing and reclaim to deal with with. Grateful for the little space I have to create ✨❤️

Some of my favorite pieces leftover from the market!

No running water in the studio means every once in a while I drag stuff outside to do a thorough clean.

Working on a new makers mark! by @bite.the.hand.studio

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and supported me at my first market! In the not too distant past, I questioned whether I would get the chance to even touch clay again; I never imagined I would be here. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for giving me the opportunity to live out my dreams! ❤️✨ by @bite.the.hand.studio

I was feeling very conflicted when I was working on this mug last night. The art school part of my brain said I should scrap it. There’s a thinner spot on the handle that I didn’t like and I knew it would take more time to fix it than it would to make a new handle. But I’m stubborn and I didn’t want to.

The other side of my brain is fighting my perfectionism. There’s nothing actually wrong with this handle..it’s a pretty decent and definitely functional. I want to make art that I’m proud of but I don’t want to be so hard on myself that I stop wanting to do it anymore.

I’m not exactly sure where that balance lies but it’s something I want to figure out.

I haven’t thrown much this week because I’ve been fighting my demons (chronic pain & the general state of..everything?) But I practiced some 5 minute mugs this afternoon as a challenge to not spend too long on one piece and risk overworking the clay. I didn’t quite keep them under 5 minutes but a lot closer than normal so I’ll take that win.

I wish it felt this relaxing when I’m actually doing it.. 😅

I almost didn’t take ceramics in college. I thought I would be bad at it and I am generally avoidant of things that I don’t immediately succeed at. Eventually though my professor wore me down and I discovered a whole new world of art making. I’m really thankful he didn’t give up & thankful that I finally gave it a shot.
