Oops, I scanned the slide backwards.
I think I like it in reverse even better. It's a good photo but the colours with the slide scanned in reverse are pretty neat.

Sunflower seed harvest
Trying to put the microscope feature on my Olympus Tough camera, the TG-6, to good use. We grew out three large seeded sunflowers for the 2020 All America Selections and are drying the heads in our greenhouse. I couldn't resist the visual delight of the spirals and individual seeds.

Honey extraction workshop
September 13, morning and and afternoon sessions

This workshop is for anyone interested in honey, in how the bees make it and how beekeepers put it in jars.

Warning, if you aren't a beekeeper already after this workshop you will want to be! A honey extraction is a full sensory experience that will engage your sense of smell, taste, sight and touch. If you have not experienced honey fresh from the hive you won't want to miss this opportunity.

Dolichovespula maculata is a beneficial wasp commonly found in gardens across North America. Fairly docile except when feeling under attack which might happen late in the gardening season when people are trying to clean up before winter.

Here is an excellent specimen nectaring on a lovage flower. I discuss this at length in a blog post at HTTPS://thebeeschool.wordpress.com.bee-blog-1/

Asian Giant Hornet
Worker of Vespa mandarinia encased in acrylic with a loony and honey bee queen for size comparison.

I lent my wasp suit to our provincial apiculturist and in exchange he gave me this specimen. Paul is tasked with tracking down sightings of this Hornet and needs the suit more than I do.

I got the suit while attending apimondia last year. It's designed to protect the wearer against the stings of another hornet, Vespa veluntina. It's a little excessive for our Yellowjackets but has come in handy when I am checking out nests.

I wish I had two of those suits so I could tag along with Paul.
