As Black History Month comes to a close, we’re celebrating an incredible milestone for the Black Music Festival, which marked its 40th anniversary this year.

For four decades, the festival has brought people together through music, culture and creativity, providing a platform for artists and creating unforgettable experiences for audiences. It’s also a chance to recognise the dedication, passion and hard work that goes into delivering a free ticketed event of this scale, year after year.

Here’s to 40 years of celebrating music, culture and community. 🎶 by @blkmusicfest

Roots to Rhythm: 40 Years of Black Music Festival

For 40 years, the Leeds Black Music Festival has brought communities together through the power of music & Culture. Roots to Rhythm celebrates that remarkable legacy with an evening of stories, history, and live performance, honoring the people and music that have shaped the festival across four decades.

Arrive early to take a journey through the timeline exhibition celebrating 40 years of the Leeds Black Music Festival. Local historian Danny Friar curated the timeline exhibition, with design by Alined Graphics, bringing together four decades of festival history and celebrating the people, music and moments that have helped create this important part of Leeds’ cultural heritage.

Alongside the exhibition, join us for a live panel discussion hosted by Leeds-based poet and writer Khadijah Ibrahim, featuring former event organisers and contributors DJ Fluid Irie, Paulette Morris and Tashi Brown. Together, they will share personal memories, behind-the-scenes stories and reflections on the festival’s journey, its significance to the community and its future direction.

The evening will also feature a live performance by Hayley Lloyd, singing well-loved reggae covers and bringing the sounds central to the festival’s story to life.

Whether you’ve been part of the festival’s story for decades, are discovering it for the first time, or simply love music and history, Roots to Rhythm is an opportunity to come together, celebrate the past, and reflect on the continuing influence of Black music and culture in Leeds.
