The Double the Fun cowl is LIVE! 🥳

This crocheted cowl was so fun to design. I wanted a piece that was a breeze to crochet, included a cool applied i-cord, and of course, was a perfect canvas for embroidery! All these boxes are ticked and the resulting cowl is aptly named - it’s a double wrapped cowl that is truly double the fun to make! You’ll enjoy the underlying construction and love making it truly yours by adding the embroidery!

The picture above shows both the inside and the outside of my sample. As you can see, the finished piece isn’t just embroidered... it’s reversible!

I’ve also added embroidery motifs to my website and Ravelry. If you purchase four or more, Double the Fun will be free. Simply use the code DOUBLETHEFUN at checkout.

Would you like to give embroidery on knitting a try?

Here’s Interval Training, a top down, yoke sweater that uses knitted colorwork to guide embroidery! The detailed pattern includes written instructions and charts for the colorwork and the embroidery. The name of the design comes from the fact that both techniques are simple - perfect training to learn the intervals of 1x1 colorwork and subsequent embroidery. It’s a lovely pattern for those looking to give something new a try!

As always, thank you for your support of my designs. ❤️

I’m about to get busy over here!

I like to think of it as very precise doodling on a canvas of knitted stockinette.

{The pattern is Kogin Flowers, a stranded colorwork cowl design. This is the Pullover size. I recently showed the Double Wrapped size with kogin stitching. I’ll be modifying this version to include duplicate stitching to maximize the number of colorful flowers!} by @bloomhandmadestudio

These pics are from The Before.

Back when the WIP felt full of promise and potential. When I was enamored with all my modifications to the pattern and filled to the brim with anticipation of this sweater becoming my all-time fave. Photographed on a Sunday morning, the first of the season that was cold enough to warrant something warm and woolly.

As it happens, mere moments later, things took a turn. For the worse. Er, I mean the worst.

My next newsletter will delineate what went astray and what remains in The After. If you’re curious to peek behind the scenes and see that not everything results in a “Ta dah! 🙌” moment at the end, you can sign up for the newsletter on my website.

The multi-colored icord seam is a real contender to be my favorite detail in this cowl!

The design is Kogin Flowers, a stranded colorwork pattern. I changed it to feature kogin embroidery by following the instructions to a T, but omitting the colorwork charts. Then I embroidered the flowers using the kogin technique and loads of DK bits and bobs in my stash. (I have a tutorial showing how to work this embroidery on stockinette on my website called Flowers.)

The last step was working the icord. I loved bringing the project to a close working this last little detail. The pattern includes links to help you do the icord and I’ve also recorded a longer video on it for my YouTube channel.

(If anyone icord isn’t your thing, no worries! The pattern includes an option for a pretty seam using just knits and purls!)

Finished! ✅

This is my Kogin Flowers cowl, modified to feature embroidery. Which is to say, I knit the cowl to specs but without following the colorwork charts. Then I had fun with loads of DK bits and bobs decorating the blank canvas. On one side, I replicated the colorwork charts using the Japanese embroidery technique. And on the other, I opted for a simple running stitch. I loved working on this and am delighted with how you can feature different stitches and colors, depending on how you wrap it.

Kogin Flowers is available on my website and Ravelry. And a tutorial for working kogin, called Flowers, can be found on my website.

Sometimes things don’t go according to plan.

And sometimes the resulting pivot is even better than the original!

Case in point, I had intended to do embroidered flowers on both sides of this cowl. But once the kogin side was completed, a second felt too, well, too.

So I shifted to a running stitch as a simple counterbalance to the beautifully busy floral side. I really like how starting with a blank knitted canvas lets you choose your own adventure as you go along!

My starting point for the canvas was my Kogin Flowers pattern. I followed the instructions for stitches and rows, but omitted the knitted colorwork. Then I added the embroidery. And just wait til you see how the (optional) I-cord turned out on this one! 🥳

Instagram is insistent on tagging the wrong products in my posts, try as I may to override it and make it right. {Sigh.} If you’d like the Kogin Flowers cowl, it is available on both my website and Ravelry. My tutorial for working kogin on stockinette is available only on my website. It is called Flowers.

Let’s say you want to make a really colorful Kogin Flowers cowl.

One approach would be to actually work kogin on a stockinette canvas made following the stitch and row counts in the pattern, as demonstrated here. One of the many reasons why I love this method because it lets you easily change your color choices, even after you’ve finished a flower. Turns out, removing embroidery on knitting is so much easier than on fabric!

You could also make the same canvas and duplicate stitch the motifs. (Coming soon!)

Or! you could work intarsia in the round! I can’t believe I’m 22 years in with this craft and I’ve never worked intarsia in the round. I might need to address this…

Kogin Flowers is written as a charted stranded color work pattern. But I am hopeful that you can see the endless possibilities it presents to create your own color story using embroidery.

Kogin Flowers is available on Ravelry and my website. And I’ve written a tutorial on how to work kogin on stockinette, called Flowers, available only on my website as Ravelry does not support tutorials.

Progress!

I figured you can’t release a pattern called Kogin Flowers without actually making a version featuring kogin, a beautiful Japanese embroidery technique.

In brief, to make this version, I followed the pattern’s stitch and row count, but used a smaller needle to make my knitted “canvas” a bit tighter. I then joyfully rummaged through my stash of DK bits and bobs to find a pretty palette for embroidery. Then I used the pattern’s charts to guide my embroidery.

Please note the pattern is written for stranded knitting and does not include instructions for embroidery. I do, however, have a written tutorial for this technique available on my website, called Flowers. It has everything you need to practice the concept so that you can apply it to your knits!

(… if you’ve read this far and have any idea how to stop Meta from tagging the wrong products from my shop, could you lmk? I would really like to send you to the exact correct listing on my website, but I’m wrastling with IG about this and they are definitely winning! Argh!…)

Kogin Flowers is
delightful to knit,
lovely to wear

and

a joy to photograph!

I wanted to show these two samples of the Double Wrapped version to highlight a few things about the pattern. Most notably, it is not double knit! I opted not to use this technique to more easily include differing motifs on the two sides of the cowl and additional colors. (How pretty is that pop of gold!) I also wanted to show the two color i-cord in all its glory, but still give the simpler garter ridge seam option its proper due. The rose and gold version shows how pretty this seam is too.
