POSTS STORIES REELS

A tribute post to Master Kong Nay who passed away today at 80 years old. One of the few master musicians to survive the Khmer Rouge, Kong Nay's experience and knowledge have been a driving force in keeping our (Khmae) culture alive. When he collaborated with VannDa in 2021, it lit the Khmae diaspora on fire.

I had dreams of travelling to meet you in a future trip to Cambodia, and learning from you. Now I can dream of meeting your former students, while we all hold your memory within.

Culture bearers like Master Kong Nay help us hold on to our collective soul. Thank you Lok Tha. May your next journey be in peace.

A scene from Grabbing the Blue Tiger: The Past and Future of Northern Khmer Musical Arts (2012). The namesake for this archival account.

Here, Chun Sangjan is playing a song within the Crieng genre, which is centered around Buddhist teachings and history. Musicians study Crieng orally for many years, memorizing stories and teachings by heart. They become living records of Buddhism, and even hold knowledge that was never recorded in books. by @bluetiger.archive
