$This is my BMW E46 M3 convertible in Silver Grey which is coming up to 1 year in my ownership. It’s been a great journey so far. The car always puts a smile on my face when I hear the S54 roar away. I’ve driven 4,000 miles in it and enjoyed them all. With its grey interior I’ve found it comfortable in the summer months with the roof down and up. Some say it’s the least desirable, but it works for me. On top of the below, there are many other smaller diy details and hours of washing/cleaning/waxing. I bought this car as a project, but it needed to have a clean bill of health to start with. I spent a bit of time looking for a car I could enjoy whilst getting jobs done. Here is what has been done in my ownership so I can enjoy this car for many years to come. The rod bearings have been replaced with ACL bearings. The sump gasket was replaced at the same time. Whilst there, the engine mounts were also replaced. As is common with this generation M3, the car’s Rear Axle Carrier Panel had fractured. The back end was stripped, cleaned, repaired and protected. All rear subframe bushes were replaced to power-flex. Other bushes were already power-flex’d. It’s good to work smart, so the corroded front to back brake lines were replaced when the RACP was being repaired. With the whole back off the car, and whilst the diff was out, the front and rear differential bushes were replaced with OEM bushes. Exhaust clamps, exhaust back box clamps were replaced and the exhaust flanges were repaired. Corroded catalytic converter bolts were also replaced. On the subject of clamps, new fuel tank and brake line clamps were fitted. New under trays were fitted when everything was being put back together. All the fluids were replaced so we’re ready for an Inspection 2 service next year. The front and rear shocks were replaced including bump stops. The originals were 22 years old, they were tired. The car instantly didn’t feel like a boat. New rear discs and pads were needed too. New mirrors inside and out ensured clear visibility all around the car. #bmwm3 #bmwinsta #bmw3series #bmwgram #bmwconvertible by @bmw_glw$

As I’m now getting used to BMW’s SMG 2 transmission, I have to say it’s pretty good. It feels like it was ahead of its time and real breakthrough for the early 000’s. It took a little bit of time to get to know its quirks. The CSL firmware update has made it a lot easier to deal with. The improved rev matching on the downshifts is really noticeable and upshifts are smoother too.
