This month, the Bob Graham Center for Public Service was honored to welcome two distinguished public servants as part of our Careers in Public Service series.

On October 14, former U.S. Ambassador to Suriname and @uf_clas alum Dennis Hays shared insights from his decades-long diplomatic career and offered first-hand advice on how to launch a career in the Foreign Service.

On October 22, @kgibsy joined us to discuss her professional journey and offer advice on public leadership, civic engagement, and building a meaningful career in local government.

Through their conversations, attendees gained valuable perspectives on career development and the many pathways to making a difference through service. Thank you to both speakers for sharing their experiences and inspiring the next generation of public servants. by @bobgrahamcenter

🗳️ First time voting? Here’s everything you need to know before heading to the polls! 🇺🇸 by @bobgrahamcenter

It was a special day at the Bob Graham Center as we welcomed former Florida First Lady Adele Graham, whose late husband, Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham, inspired the creation of the Center, along with her granddaughters, Peyton Elias and Adele Gibson for a visit, lunch, and tour of the Center on October 5.

Seeing several generations of the Graham family together served as a powerful reminder of Senator Graham's enduring commitment to public service and civic engagement. We were honored to share with them the work our students, faculty, and alumni are carrying forward in support of that vision.

Thank you for spending time with us and for continuing to be part of the Graham Center story. by @bobgrahamcenter

Eligible IDs, Eligible Votes: Should College IDs Be Accepted as a Form of Voter Identification in Florida?

In the United States, voting is a right protected by the Constitution for eligible citizens, but access to voting is not always guaranteed. Florida requires voters to provide identification at the polls, but not all forms of identification are accepted, including college student IDs.

With millions of college-aged Americans eligible to vote, the question of which forms of identification should be accepted at the polls is both timely and significant.

The Office of Public Policy Events, The Bob Graham Center, The Dial Center, and ACCENT Speakers Bureau invite the UF and Gainesville communities to an evening of spirited debate on whether college IDs should be accepted as a form of voter identification in Florida.

The event, “Eligible IDs, Eligible Votes: Should College IDs Be Accepted as a Form of Voter Identification in Florida?”, will take place in the Reitz Union Senate Chamber on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.

During the two-on-two debate, members of the Speech and Debate Society will argue both sides of the issue, and a panel of expert judges will offer insights and determine which side presented the stronger argument. The Bob Graham Fellows will present voter myth-busting materials while the judges formulate their responses.

Refreshments will be provided after the event.

To request an accommodation, please email public-policy-events@ufl.edu by October 21. by @bobgrahamcenter

Early voting begins today! 🗳️

Anyone who votes in Alachua County can vote at the Reitz Union through October 19 and November 1, only during the early voting period. by @bobgrahamcenter

Gulf Scholars in Action!

Housed in the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, UF Gulf Scholars brings together undergraduate students from across disciplines to explore the environmental, social, and economic challenges facing Gulf communities. Through hands-on learning, community partnerships, and public service, students gain experience tackling real-world challenges while making a difference in the places they study.

And our Gulf Scholars have been busy this fall!

🌿 In Cedar Key, students participated in the 41st annual International Coastal Cleanup, helping remove marine debris and contributing to efforts to protect Florida's Gulf Coast.

🌲 Closer to home, Gulf Scholar and @gatorcorpsuf member amayab.10 partnered with @alachuaconservationtrust to organize a forestry field trip, giving students an opportunity to explore local ecosystems and learn about conservation firsthand.

🎤 In Pensacola, we celebrated the opening of Remaining Relentless, an exhibit developed in collaboration with @historicpensacola highlighting the stories of residents who have spent decades confronting environmental pollution in their communities. The exhibit grew out of the Pensacola Environmental History Project, a collaboration between Gulf Scholars and @spohp that brought students into the community to document these important histories.

From coastal cleanups and conservation to preserving community stories, these experiences carry forward Gov. Bob Graham’s legacy of “learning by doing” by connecting classroom learning with meaningful work in Gulf communities.
