I was a wee bit apprehensive. This was an impulse and not one totally thought through. 10pm in Delhi, isn’t a particularly confidence inspiring time for a woman. On the upside, my uber driver had told me I was the third person he had taken to the protest site this day and he had promised the previous passengers that he would join the march on 20th. He agreed vehemently it was time for change. One of the first things that struck me was the mix of people from visibly different classes castes and religion in the same space. On the same level. An increasingly rare phenomenon in the India that we now exist in. The air was alive with vibrant music, dhol, sloganeering. And hope and grit of the kind that only the young are uniquely capable of. For most of us middle class, as we grow older, our families, lost hurts and refound dreams, money we accumulated and goals we still want to conquer.. all somehow take precedence while the world and its vagaries fade into the background. Partly self serving, partly cynical and tired, we make sympathetic noises. But only as long as it doesn’t cost us anything. This was different. Mostly under 30, these were strangers sitting or standing next to each other in the furnace like heat, exchanging smiles and shouting slogans, sharing bottles of water, fanning each other and urging the other to take the cooler spot. Determined to show up in the face of contrary opinions, deterring adults and imminent threat of brutality. Maybe it’s not just their youth. It’s that the very act of resistance can infuse you with both courage and compassion. Simply because it means there’s hope. In asking for what’s rightfully yours. In standing next to someone else who maybe as different from you as possible but demands the same right - for you as well as for them. In questioning the powers that be and snatching back what was always yours. Your voice. Your future. Your country. So, here’s more power to these young folks who are the future of this tired old nation. For reminding the rest of us of what it feels like to have a spine. …. #TheSecondLifeProject by @bombaychowparty
The Second Life Project, Kochi. Setting up a new home for my parents. This week, we broke the little wall that separated the dining from the living room It made the house bigger, filled it with light. While we waited for the Uber that evening, My father told me I need to accept that at some point he will go. I tried to argue. Said it was true of everyone. Could be true of me too. He looked at me. His softened, cloudy eyes wrinkling at the corners. Laughing, as if he was cracking one of his dad jokes, he said, ‘You know what I’m saying.’ ‘It’s not possible. I will not allow it’, I said. I was embracing my newfound parental role, hard. He laughed again, waving his hand. You can’t control everything. I can’t control anything, I whispered. He pulled me closer when my cheeks dampened. Who will be with me then… . You will be fine, he replied. #TheSecondLifeProject by @bombaychowparty

How do you make a heritage dosa spot feel fresh and exciting in a city with a culinary attention span as short as it is crowded? That’s the conundrum that Reshmy Kurian and the team behind Bandra’s (and now Juhu’s) Benne appear to have solved. This meticulous approach to creating and evolving not just the space’s aesthetic and feel, but also their overarching brand philosophy and ethos, was spearheaded by the multidisciplinary homegrown designer, who used her specialised user-centred-design background to help Benne realise the full potential of its vision. We sat down with Reshmy (@bombaychowparty)recently to talk about the creation, execution, sustenance, and evolution of Benne. Swipe to see what she says! So delighted to have this interview with with @vpatra and @homegrownin published today. @benne.bombay is a labour of love for many people starting with @akhiliyer and @shriyaanarayan. It’s been special for so many reasons - I took it up at what was the toughest point of my life and found my way back to design through a design process that brought together so much of my work from the past two decades - my UX and digital marketing brain which insists that everything be rooted in an understanding and analysis of the user and business ecosystem and that brand strategy comes first and then all else follows, my writing brain that insists that during ideation it’s equally important to let go of rationale and flow with instinct, my exhibition design training from NID days which instilled a joy for playing with materials and creating spaces which I believe has the power to transform experiences and people. And my constant love and engagement with food (and butter!) and all that it means in a cultural context. It’s also special because I was working with @akhiliyer and @shriyaanarayan, both of whom I love as friends and respect for their authentic, passionate yet disciplined work ethic. Their constant belief in my process and vision and whole hearted collaboration is what made this work the way it did. It’s such a pleasure to work with those who have a vision, the courage to throw their weight behind it and the ability to bring in collaborators they respect and then create space for those experts to add to the vision. It’s the only way creativity can flourish. When it comes to branding, this clarity and courage is a non negotiable. It takes nuance and understanding to ask the right questions and it was a pleasure to have this conversation with @homegrownin for exactly that reason. Thank you for this @vpatra PS: incidentally,, this picture was taken by Akhil a few years ago when we first started @theartistcollectiveindia and I conducted the brand workshop for us to ideate on what we were setting out to build. Please do read and share your thoughts. Link in bio. by @bombaychowparty
Finding life and yourself post a separation comes with it’s own unpredictable ebb and flow. The same goes with a large burst is inspiration and action. Thailand was incredible. Yesterday, my first time cooking for a group of dear ones after years… it was amazing. Warm, gratifying, joyful. Full of life and celebration. But the silence after the first storm of monsoon can feel deafening. Fresh green newly sprouted leaves, dust that’s settled after a long time… but the light.. the light that saturated everything with colour.. it’s still grey. You want it to pour again. You felt so much after so long that you don’t want to go back to the open vastness of your solitude. You’ve been there before. And yet, that’s why you know that you need to rest here once more for a bit…. Because here, you will meet yourself again. #life #musings #singleandhappy #silence w Been there? by @bombaychowparty
Every time you create something, you leave a bit of you behind. Maybe that part never really belonged to you and that’s why it yearned to be out. And this one was particularly special. Seeing it breathing, living, taking on a life of its own is an experience unlike any other. @benne.bombay. #benne #dosa #design #branding #brand #interiorsdesign by @bombaychowparty
