This weekend at @lacolombedorhtx , guests stepped into history and artistry. Jazz welcomed them through the lobby and garden, leading into Legacy in Line and Color, a @bondcontemporary showcase honoring the late Floyd Newsum, Jr.—a visionary whose five decades of work shaped Houston and beyond.

Just a day before, @janicebond and Bond Contemporary presented the iconic @mingsmithphoto at Untitled Art’s Houston debut, marking the city’s arrival on the global art stage. For Bond, the mission is clear: build bridges between the local and the global, while ensuring Houston’s own creative voices are never overshadowed.

This past weekend, we hosted the opening ceremony for Cadence of Light: Signal, Surface, Field - a stunning exhibition of works by @floyd.newsum , curated by our gallery-in-residence, @bondcontemporary

The afternoon was filled with community, energy, and reverence for an artist who transformed line, color, and light into language. Newsum’s work invites us to slow down, to notice the rhythm between structure and improvisation, and to see how form can carry meaning in its purest sense.

We’re honored to share this exhibition within the intimate walls of La Colombe d’Or. Step inside and experience it for yourself.

BOND CONTEMPORARY is delighted to share that we are the new Gallery in Residence at La Colombe d’Or.

Inaugural Exhibition Opening Saturday, 1:30 PM:
Cadence of Light: Signal, Surface, Field
Selected Works by Floyd Newsum, Jr.

Newsum’s abstract language lets line signal, color structure, and surface hold light. Grids and horizons meet drifting marks and pauses, works that don’t resolve into a single message but sustain a conversation between discipline and improvisation. Read the cadence: a held edge, a quick notation, a quiet interval.
Installed within La Colombe d’Or’s intimate architecture, Cadence of Light offers time and room to look slowly, an invitation to consider how form carries meaning and how light, color, and line reshape our seeing.

Cadence of Light: Signal, Surface, Field presents a focused solo of Floyd Newsum Jr.’s abstractions, where color, line, and structure establish a measured rhythm. Grids meet glyphs; surfaces hold light. Installed in an intimate, design-forward setting, the exhibition invites sustained looking and rewards close study, revealing calibrated edges, layered fields, and the quiet tension between order and improvisation. Cadence of Light speaks to collectors, curators, and guests alike, affirming Newsum’s practice as both rigorously formal and deeply resonant.

STEWARDING LEGACY
BOND CONTEMPORARY is honored to announce representation of the Floyd Newsum Jr. Art Estate, marking a significant new chapter in stewarding the legacy of this visionary artist.

Floyd Newsum Jr. (1950–2024) was a pioneering force in contemporary American art, known for a multidisciplinary practice encompassing painting, sculpture, drawing, and installation. His vibrant palette and symbolic iconography—drawn from African American heritage, ancient cultures, and spiritual traditions—formed a poetic, politically resonant visual language. His work powerfully reflects on identity, resilience, and ancestral memory.

Beyond the studio, Floyd’s civic impact was equally profound. As a co-founder of Project Row Houses in Houston’s Third Ward, he reimagined the role of the artist in community life. His legacy continues to shape generations of creatives and social visionaries.

Newsum’s work is held in major institutions including the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

BOND CONTEMPORARY will lead estate efforts around exhibitions, institutional placement, collector engagement, and scholarship—ensuring Floyd Newsum Jr.’s vision continues to resonate across time and place.

“Floyd Newsum Jr. was not only a master of form and color, but a profound cultural narrator whose work expands our collective memory.”
— Janice Bond, Founder & Director, BOND CONTEMPORARY

“His practice was always rooted in the spirit of community, storytelling, and joy.”
— Floyd Newsum III, Sr. Advisor to the Estate

We proudly debut this partnership at NADA New York, Booth C206, May 7–11. A solo exhibition follows this Fall at our Houston gallery.

Introducing BOND CONTEMPORARY. Where vision is collected.

BOND CONTEMPORARY is a contemporary art gallery and curatorial platform committed to presenting exceptional work by mid-career and established artists, as well as stewarding significant artist estates and engaging the secondary market with discernment and depth. With a focus on artists whose practices carry enduring cultural and historical weight, the gallery foregrounds work that is materially rigorous, conceptually refined, and positioned within the continuum of contemporary and postwar art history.

Headquartered in Houston, BOND CONTEMPORARY operates at the intersection of scholarship, connoisseurship, and cultural stewardship. Through curated exhibitions, select fair presentations, and institutional partnerships, the gallery serves as a trusted destination for collectors, museums, and foundations seeking work of lasting significance and value.
Representing practices that span painting, sculpture, installation, new media, and time-based work, the gallery prioritizes legacy, provenance, and formal integrity. Whether reintroducing masterworks into the public sphere or strategically placing contemporary works by career-defining artists, BOND CONTEMPORARY is guided by a curatorial ethos that bridges historical perspective with forward-looking engagement.

Distinct for its thoughtful approach to both artist representation and market strategy, the gallery is deeply invested in long-term relationships and the careful placement of culturally consequential work. More than a site of display, BOND CONTEMPORARY is a conduit for influence—where context, care, and commitment converge.
