We expected magic, romance and plenty of spice from ACOTAR. But breastfeeding? That was an unexpected plot twist! 📚

The latest book in Sarah J. Maas's hugely popular A Court of Thorns and Roses series has sparked an unexpected conversation about something rather more everyday: breastfeeding.

From leaking breasts and sore nipples to nursing pads and hand expressing, Feyre's experiences have struck a chord with some readers — while others have found the breastfeeding references uncomfortable.

In her latest article for Boobingit, Vivienne David-Makai explores the reactions and asks an interesting question: How can we be comfortable reading explicit sexual scenes, yet feel uncomfortable when breastfeeding and breast milk enter the story?

ACOTAR readers — what did you make of the breastfeeding references?

Hope I gave enough time to read it...
but ⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD! ACOTAR – A Court of Splintered Harmony

Who knew a fantasy book could sneak in a breastfeeding conversation? 🧚‍♀️🍒

If you've picked up the newest ACOTAR book by Sarah J. Maas, you might have noticed something rather unexpected: Feyre is not just a High Lady, a powerful Fae and the heroine of an epic fantasy romance. She's also a breastfeeding mum.

And honestly? I have THOUGHTS. 👀

We get references to leaking breasts, sore nipples, engorgement, nursing pads, hand expressing milk when away from her baby, and the constant mental juggling of being a mother while having an entire kingdom to run.

Sound familiar? You don't need to be a High Lady of the Night Court to relate to that!
But what I particularly love is what this representation can do.

📖 Normalising breastfeeding outside parenting books.
Breastfeeding isn't something that only belongs in antenatal classes, NHS leaflets or parenting Instagram accounts. It's part of everyday life. And seeing it woven into a hugely popular fantasy romance series can introduce the subject to readers who might never actively seek out breastfeeding information.

📖 Showing that breastfeeding isn't always picture-perfect.
Even Feyre has to deal with leaking, discomfort and the practicalities of feeding her baby. Breastfeeding is a relationship, but it's also a very physical, sometimes inconvenient reality.

📖 Mothers can be mothers AND women.
Breastfeeding doesn't cancel out s3xuality, desire, ambition, power or identity. You can be a devoted mum, a powerful leader and a woman with a s3x life. These things aren't mutually exclusive.

📖 And perhaps most importantly: breastfeeding in front of other people.
Feeding your baby around friends and family without embarrassment or having to disappear into another room? Yes, please. Let's make that normal.

Now, I'm not suggesting that ACOTAR should replace your breastfeeding education,
but representation matters. And sometimes, the conversation starts in the most unexpected places.

So, fellow bookworms & mamas: did you expect to find breastfeeding among all that magic, drama and spice? 🌶️

I sometimes wonder whether people still see breastfeeding as old-fashioned, outdated or something that fewer people do these days.

Despite all the progress we've made in understanding and supporting breastfeeding, outdated attitudes and misconceptions haven't necessarily disappeared.

So, genuine question: have you ever felt that breastfeeding is viewed as old-fashioned or out of step with modern life?

We'd love to hear your thoughts. 👇 by @boobingit

🎃 Breastfeeding myths can be scary — but they’re not always true!

“You can’t breastfeed twins.”
“You’ll have to stop when you return to work.”
“You can’t know if your baby is getting enough milk.”

These are just some of the things real mums have been told about breastfeeding. But what happens when you question the advice, find the right support and hear from other parents who’ve been there?

For our Halloween feature, we asked Boobingit mums to share the breastfeeding myths that worried them — and how they challenged them. Their stories are a reminder of just how easily misinformation can undermine confidence, and why parents deserve accurate information and support.

👀 Swipe through to see five breastfeeding myths — then read the full article on Boobingit.com.

👻 Breastfeeding advice that belongs in a horror show - just in time for Halloween! From outdated breastfeeding myths to terrible feeding advice, let's bust the misinformation new parents still hear, as evidence based support without the guilt, fear or unnecessary rules should be the norm.
Anything else I've missed? by @boobingit

Forget ghosts and ghouls...Motherhood can be a horror house of its own.

The laundry that reproduces overnight. The daily dinner dilemma (and yet whatever you cook, there will be someone who refuses to eat it). The childcare bills. The mental load. The cold cup of tea you've reheated so many times it's basically a different drink.

Yet somehow we're also told to enjoy every minute, look after ourselves and have our lives together. All at once?!

Hello Halloween season to all the mums just trying to make it through the day!

One year of breastfeeding. And I tracked every single feed. 🤍

895.6 hours. 1,589 night feeds. 1,210 oz of milk donated. And an estimated 250 litres of milk produced.

I started tracking because I was sleep-deprived and could never remember which side I’d last fed on. Somewhere along the way, curiosity got the better of me, and I wanted to know what a year of breastfeeding actually looked like in numbers.

The results surprised me. Not because I expected breastfeeding to be easy, but because it’s so easy to lose sight of just how much time goes into it when you’re living it one feed at a time.

And yet, these numbers still don’t tell the whole story. They can’t measure the comfort, the connection, the sleepy cuddles, or the countless times I’ve been exactly what Winnie needed.

They also don’t capture the privilege of being able to donate milk to help other babies, including those in NICU. 🤍

Whether you’ve breastfed for a day, a month, a year, or beyond, your journey is yours. And every journey deserves to be celebrated without comparison.

Save this for a little reminder of just how much goes into breastfeeding, or share it with a mum who deserves to feel seen. 🤍

A little Friday reminder for all the breastfeeding parents out there. 🤍

You can love the closeness, the comfort and the connection… and still find the constant feeding, the broken sleep and being needed around the clock absolutely exhausting.

You can be grateful for your breastfeeding journey and still have hard days. You can love feeding your baby and still need a break.

Both things can be true. And you don’t have to feel guilty about either.

Sending a little solidarity to anyone who needs this reminder today.

Little ones learn by watching the world around them. 🥹

And sometimes, that means feeding their own baby dolls, too!

We love seeing breastfeeding reflected in everyday play.

Returning to work should not mean stopping breastfeeding.

But for many parents returning to paid work, continuing to breastfeed can be difficult. Breastfeeding parents in the UK have no statutory right to paid breastfeeding or expressing breaks at work, forcing many to choose between feeding their baby and participating fully in work.

As Rachael Bews of Don't Make Me Choose explains in her article for Boobingit:

“Continuing to breastfeed should not depend on whether you happen to have an understanding manager, access to a spare office or enough flexibility to work around the problem yourself.”

Be more like Sienna Miller.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, Sienna had a message for anyone uncomfortable with breastfeeding in public: feed your baby, and let others deal with it.

How people react when you’re breastfeeding for… 👀🤱

1 month: “Fabulous, go you!” 🥰
3 months: “Amazing!” 🙌
9 months: “Still going strong!” 💪
1 year: “Oh, wow… still breastfeeding?” 🤨
2 years: “You’re STILL doing that?” 😳
3 years: “But aren’t they a bit old for that?” 🫣
4 years: “Surely it’s time to stop?” 😬
5 years: “Ew!” 😳

Funny how the reactions can change, even though you’re doing exactly the same thing: feeding your child. 🤎

Breastfeeding is celebrated… until it goes on longer than some people expect. So why are we still so uncomfortable with extended breastfeeding?
