During @3daysofdesign , by an act of pure chance, I plunged into @sacrecoeurdesignstore — Pernille Hell’s dense, layered world — and found it endlessly uplifting.

Between exquisite antiques and newly designed pieces runs a thread of the avant-garde: the living, beating heart that pulls you into this interior vortex, with an authenticity and finesse that resonate long after you leave. So on this daftly hot summer evening in Scotland, I am once again entering the apartment that elevates the mundane act of taking up space into something curated, nonchalant, deeply learned and fun — in its feminine fullness.

What a place. I am bouncing between Man Ray, Rodin, endless titles around the room, the divinely real kitchen, the leather doves, a paradise scene with Nastassja Kinski as Eve. —— I’ve only just begun reading An Archive by @edmunddewaal, yet it already resonates closely with ideas I’ve been tracing through my thesis, around the material reality of books and archives, and their quiet but insistent spatiality.

As BOOK—SPACE at @esala_edinburgh comes to an end, I’m looking forward to holding these thoughts in conversation one last time, on Tuesday evening from 6.

📚 READING EDINBURGH · 2024/25 ESALA Projects Residency Closing Event

BOOK—SPACE, 20–22 Chambers Street

As BOOK—SPACE residency draws to a close, I’d like to gather once more in this small room that has held communal readings, conversations and quiet experiments. What began as a way to think with books and with the city became a temporary commons for anyone who stepped inside.

For the final event, I’m returning to something simple. Come and share a memory of the place where you read best in Edinburgh, or where the city once held that space for you. The bench that’s gone, the café that changed hands, the corner of a library that no longer exists. These traces, present or lost, shape how we read the city as we move through it.*

This is an analogue and free evening, a welcome pause in December’s commercial noise. My only offering is wine, with Polish gingerbread, leftover bookmarks, a few tunes and unhurried conversation. A gentle way to close the residency.

( XII ) BRING YOUR OWN BOOK: Transdisciplinary Research Symposium SGSAH catalyst event

It was incredible to witness a small community forming around shared reading, critical attention and the spatial thinking behind the Common Room for (Un)Common Books. The analogue quality of the day mattered, the books in our hands, the pace of listening, the room holding its own atmosphere. I opened with Blinding the Invisible, tracing Mallarmé’s typographic pressures and the way Broodthaers altered the poem’s architecture, framing the book as a site of encounter rather than an object to decode.

Readings from Ameek Gilhotra, Terrance Harris and Yoonha Hwang expanded the room—from the kinetic pulse of New York in Bernadette Mayer’s Memory, to the anthropological precision of Zora Neale Hurston’s work, to the ordered yet affective structure of a nineteenth-century Signet Library catalogue. We closed with Susan Torrance’s reading from the 1943 Inverness Courier, a reminder of how archival voices persist, resonate and re-enter the present.

The afternoon’s discussion carried a heightened sense of intimacy, critical vitality and performativity, as research-in-practice unfolded within the room. I am grateful to Dr Dorian Wiszniewski and Dr Cara Broadley, as SGSAH Art and Design Catalyst co-leads, for the work involved in making this form of methodological exchange possible, as well as Dr Ella Chmielewska for her presence and contribution. It served me as a reminder that research by-design is sustained through proximity, shared reading and the materially situated conditions of encounter that the Common Room format makes possible.

So in love with the line of Franciszka Themerson. Earlier this autumn I hosted a session with Gosia Bugaj on the conceptual and multidisciplinary richness of Franciszka and Stefan Themerson’s work.

Here, Franciszka’s 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘥 brushes against the fervour of our inner worlds, a line that feels both freeing and exact.
