POSTS STORIES REELS

Just a couple of days after another world renown hunter (an ermine) graced me with it’s presence, I caught this mystical lynx stalking our husky while I was head down in yard work. Pretty damn cool.

In British Columbia we had an assigned set of British Columbia WorkSafe (similar to OSHA) qualified/certified fallers. In BC, all fallers have to be certified through a process mandated through a separate government agency that oversees and supersedes all sanctioned felling, both commercially contracted and by government felling chainsaw bars, including on wildfires.
Now, before you bless the fire community with your valued opinions on this.. this Just Is, as the Buddha would accept. To adapt and overcome is the key for the U.S. comrades. It takes only about 2-4 days to get used to this before the saws figure everything out and get trained and comfortable. Similar to other things some of us find to talk about rather than overcome, this one difference in safety protocol only proved to be a slight learning curve and not a negative hinderance on proton-minded folks.

If you’re wondering about the flagging, it all means something. “Danger Tree Assessment” and “Danger Tree Felling.”

Not flagged “broke,” but N.F.G. per locals.

The morning Canadian commute.
•
The hike-in ranks second only to the hike-out. Sometimes it takes the inner voice to pump us up to get up the hill at the beginning of the day, and other times it’s a race up. Either way, it’s a sweet nostalgic part of the job that is missed during the winter.

The Donnie Creek Fire has mellowed the last few days due to containment lines and weather just as we finish up our 21-day assignment.

Just a few Americans getting together in Canada for Independence Day. Our good friends @mt_baker_ia teamed up with us Alaskans for a photo in front of “Industry” before they time out.

We’ve had rain and thunderstorms with copious lightning 3 out of the last 4 days here on the Donnie Crk Fire in BC, #Canada and were still able to get the very dry fuels here to take to ignitions to bolster perimeters with black-line (or “guard”)
•
Its’s very similar to Alaska here in regards to fuels. Black spruce, lichen floor, but with lodge-pine.
•
Also, repping the US [and themselves], looking out for us & each other here and doing quite solid work is our good comrades @mt_baker_ia T2IA crew from WA. It’s nice having a some Americans 🇺🇸 in BC 🇨🇦…and an “honour.”
•
One last item, in BC the oil and gas industry is just referred to as the “Industry,” and many of the fires that burn in this part of BC burn on Industry devoted lands or very near. Common practice is to have ICP at Industry built man-camps.

Congratulations to my man Paul Peterson for making it to retirement. He’s been the State FMO for @blm_nevada where he’s truly led and served the folks working for him. He is/has been an inspiration and friend to me and all that have been fortunate to be around him or work for him.
A great and genuine human.
•
As he retires, he walks away still making the community and those around him a better place. He will lead up a sweet non-profit effort to make sure every first-year firefighter in Nevada will get a pair of free fire boots paid for by the fund to ensure that Nevada’s younger fire generation is taken care of. It’s called the Will Hawkins Rookie Boot Fund (rookieboots.org)
Named after Will Hawkins who passed in 2016 outside of Winnemucca in an engine rollover. And there is a story behind the boots. Hawkins couldn’t afford quality boots his first year and had to buy the cheap hamburger grinder boots that tore up his feet.
What a great idea by Will Hawkins’ parents and Paul Peterson to make a difference and generate such a positive into Nevada’s tight-knit and close fire community.
