Back in summer 2024, shortly after moving to Japan, I was invited by @ganghwauniverse and @borahmkim to join an artist residency programme to produce a performance art piece for the Momentary Island Festival (@momentary_islandfest), hosted on the island of Ganghwa, about an hour to the west of Seoul, close to the North Korean border. This festival was a one day excursion where the audience were taken to various locations across the island, each of which had been transformed into momentary windows of interactive performance, each with their own unique energy and stories to uncover. As part of this body of work, I sampled conversations and sounds from across the island, whilst learning about families split across the border after the Korean war. This sampling included aggressive propaganda, audible from the loudspeakers directed at Ganghwa Island from over the water in North Korea. I developed these sounds and conversational samples throughout the residency, crafting a soundscape for the performance which I performed dynamically in response to how the audience interacted with the work. Alongside a wonderful game theatre producer (@borahmkim) and dancer-performer (dancingqueerofficial), we worked to construct a narrative of love, reconciliation and repair, recording participants’ “messages of love” as the “cost of admission” to the space. These messages were sampled live as they entered the performance space and played back in various modulated forms whenever that particular participant engaged with the performance. This work had the audience enter into a spaceship and work together to uncover the reasons why it was broken, solving a puzzle representing division and artificial borders. This challenge ultimately revealed a picture of two North Korean soldiers kissing, whilst the soundscape slowly morphed from harsh tonality to a more calming and pleasant soundscape as the audience worked together to free the performer trapped behind the border. I am truly thankful for the time I spent on Ganghwa-do and to the incredible people I met there during the residency ✨💞 Venue: @heewarae_official #performanceart #soundscape #festival #artistresidency #ganghwado by @borahmkim

Plant weaving workshop. Plant weaving workshop 🌿 Växtvävningsworkshop här i Östersund! Så himla häftigt✨ #plantweaving #GamlaKyrkan #Östersunds by @borahmkim
INVITATION TO EXHIBITION & ARTIST TALK Processing Landscapes 2 Welcome to an exhibition, artist talk, and workshop at Östersund Old Church. #artistinresidence #peterstridsberg #norway #surndalbillag by @borahmkim
